If the phone wont update using kies or the OTA feature, then your only option is to flash new firmware using odin.

Head over to samMobile.com, register on the site, download the latest firmware and flash. The odin flashing program is included in the download. You will also find flashing guides on there as well as on here.
This is the link for the firmware downloads for the SII http://www.sammobile.com/forum/showthread.php?t=23

    Once again many thanks.

To be honest Richard I don't think I'm anywhere near competent or confident of carrying out such a procedure. As I'm not able to currently carry out the updating procedure via the conventional means (Kies or OTA) am I to understand that sometime in the future I'll be able to as and when the powers that be decide that I can?

Last Q first. We know that there is an update available to 2.3.5, but if the phone wont update now either via kies or the OTA then I don't see how that would change in the future.

I doubt it's you that can't carry out the update, it's more likely kies or there's a problem with the OTA, something like the Samsung servers.

Updating with odin, is really just a case of, get the files, put them into the right sections within odin, put phone into download mode, connect phone with USB cable, click start in odin. Wait for odin to finish, phone will then reboot and your done, well apart from setting your phone up.

But is it officially available that's the question. Samsung has told me that this update 2.3.5 isn't available for my phone (they said "Please be advised that there currently is no official release date for this firmware version for your particular handset.")so I'd hope they know what hey were talking about!!

I'll give it till the New Year and see what happens re. OTA attempts (I've given up with Kies it's too slow and clunky even on a PC) then I'll phone Samsung and ask them what's going on.

Thanks again Richard your help and advice is much appreciated.

Ok lets put it like this. 2.3.5 is Officially available via kies for the Galaxy S. (OTA on the S doesn't work.) A mate of mine got the SII with 2.3.5 pre-installed, so going off of that it should be available either via kies or OTA.
