How do I get the screen to light up again when I want to end a call?

I'm still finding my way around my new Samsung Galaxy S Plus.

I've noticed that, when I make a call, the screen goes blank as soon as the call is connected. When I want to end the call, I can't work out how to get the screen to light up again so that I can press the "End Call" button. I've tried lots of suggestions, sometimes the screen flashes up for a split second, but not long enough to let me press the "End Call" button.

Is it supposed to do this and what is the proper way to end calls please?

When you move the phone away from your ear the screen should just light up, it's the proximity sensor that controls it. Not sure if setting the screen time out to a longer one would help.
