I suppose the best app depends on what you want to do with your phone! The ones I like best are mostly games so thats all about gaming taste. The most usefull app I found is called Easy tether....Its for making your phone into a modem for a pc or laptop with your phones data package. This does cost however. I use this one because I couldnt get some of the free ones to work or they caused conflicts (PDAnet is free and works well if you can get the drivers to install without conflicts. It was fine on my laptop and tab but my home PC just gave me a headache trying..Easy Tether is worth the £6.odd for not having to mess around). After this I find Root explorer a very good app if your phone is rooted and you know a bit about customizing the Android system. Then there is Titanium backup....It backs up stuff also needs a rooted phone....These are the 3 apps I couldnt live without....There are hundreds of great apps though and alternatives to the ones I posted so have a look, see what works for you.

There's no need to buy any apps for tethering!!
My Samsung Galaxy S atleast has a very good tethering capabilities already in it.
Settings->Wireless and network->Tethering--> Then select the desired method of sharing your mobile internet connection either via USB or creating a Mobile AP(i.e you can can use your phone as a wireless accespoint with with computers or other devices with wi-fi capabilities).

So no need to buy any apps and besides I've found out that the phones own system works very well.

I tried to connect with the Galaxy S built in thether. I had the phones USB in development mode and Samsung USB drivers on the PC. No matter what I tried though I got "USB device Error" on the phone when I enabled tether. Reading posts on the net this seems to be common in Windows 7 64bit (its usually 64bit when people post the problem). I guess there maybe something missing from the phone or windows to make the 2 compatible? Easy Thether does what it says on the tin. Got me connected in an emergency when everything else failed. PDAnet also failed but as I said that worked fine on the laptop with the same install procedure. The laptop is 32bit which makes me further think that the problem may be due to 64bit windows.
