Question Can WiFi be used if phone service discontinued?

    Hi all,

After browsing the FAQs and Search on this forum, I didn't find an answer so I'm posting it here:

I have a Samsung Galaxy Epic 4G (firmware 2.3.5 Gingerbread) and wanted to know if I can still use its WiFi for Apps usage and Internet connectivity if I have the phone service disabled (which is through Sprint).

I called Sprint and the rep I talked to said that once phone service is discontinued, all connectivity no longer works.

BUT -- that's why I'm posting this question here.

Are there any tricks to getting WiFi to work for App/Internet connectivity if phone service is discontinued?

If so, what is the trick(s)?

    Thanks!

The wifi should work no matter what services have been disabled. From what I know the only problem may be with a invalid simcard which could affect the phone booting up.

Wouldn't a PAYG sim card work? You shouldn't need to top up any money on it.

Thanks for the feedback Tufftoad. I'll look into that.

Has anyone tried a PAYG simcard on this phone, and can confirm you have WiFi access without regular phone service?

I'm sure Tufftoad's right. Why not test it yourself - take your SIM out and try to browse using WiFi.

Let us know how you get on.

    Cheers

Don't think it will work without a sim, I'm sure there has to be some sort of sim in there

After powering off, taking the SIM card out, and powering on, I still have phone service (was able to make a phone call) and can still browse the web, regardless if WiFi is enabled or disabled on the device. My phone clearly still has Sprint's phone and data service active.

So just taking the SIM card out doesn't disable the carrier's service to properly test this theory.

Assuming that is what you meant when you said test it yourself by taking out the SIM card...

Wish my phone could do this. The SGS(I9000) I have just works likes Samsungs ipod type thing when I remove the sim.
