    Lose Kies desktop after root

I rooted a few days ago using the benign kernel CF-Root-SGS2_ZS_OZS_KG2-v4.1-CWM4 and then removed a few apps that are listed on the 'safe' list sticky here. Yesterday when I connected to my PC via USB cable Kies did not start up. I tried Kies air and it worked. I noticed when I connected the USB icon showed on the phone, so I dragged down the status message window and it said something like click on it to activate USB, so I did. My phone then turned up as 2 external drives (one for SD card, the other for phone). It seems to work fine so no panic here, but it made me curious. It used to show up as one device I9100, now it is 2 drives. Wondering if anyone else has seen this and if it was likely due to rooting, or removing some app related to Kies?

Kies sees your phone as one device, but your PC sees the 2 separate storage modules - the internal SD card and the external SD card. It's nothing to do with rooting.

Thanks, the intent of the question was to determine if rooting or removing an app was the cause of losing Kies desktop. So if it is not rooting, then it must have been due to removing one of the apps that was on the list. I assume there is no way to get Kies back then, short of flashing a ROM?

Have a look in Settings > Wireless and network > USB settings. If kies is already selected then you have USB debugging on, turn it off to use kies. This is under Settings > Applications > Development.

Your process maybe different, but the end result should be the same.

    Doomed,

I didn't make the connection about how I had turned on debugging in order to root, and had not changed it back. You got it exactly right, thanks very much!

Interesting now I've also learned how to change the way my PC Connects to the phone. Now of course I'm wondering if there is an advantage to not connecting via Kies. Transfer speed perhaps?

Apart from not using kies (That was enough for me). You could put stuff where you want, swap it around, put data on to move to a different PC

Amen to that, I hear what you're saying. So I never realized it before, but I guess for anyone that is not rooted they could still achieve the same end by just turning on USB debugging? Thanks for bringing me up to speed.

Soon you'll never bother with the evil that is kies again.

If your talking about getting into mass storage mode, you don't need USB debugging on or to be Rooted, as there is an option for it

I think USB debugging is only needed when you want to get at the phones Root menu. (Using Adb (Android debug bridge) I think).
