Help - Phone failed during firmware update

Yesterday Kies told me there was a new firmware upgrade to install. I accepted doing it, so it backed-up some of my data and started the installation. The progress bar remained at 0% for more than 40 minutes and I became suspicious that it was not working. I tried interrupting with the cancel button and that didn't work, so the only way was to remove the cable (yes there were warnings not to do it... still I assumed that this scenario would have been foreseen). Kies woke up with the interruption and asked if I wanted to do an emergency firmware recovery, I said yes and proceeded with it. It gave me some instructions to switch off the phone, replace battery, and remove the cable. I switched the phone off and on again and there appeared a symbol representing the loss of connection to the PC, so I re-connected. The recovery started fine, but half way through it, it failed due to a problem on the phone. Since then the phone is dead. It won't start anymore... tried replacing battery and it's still dead... anyway out of this?? What can I do??

    Many thanks in advance!

    Bruno

Try getting the phone in recovery mode and carrying out a factory reset. If that doesn't work then try getting the phone into download mode and flashing firmware manually.

How to put Galaxy S in recovery mode:
    Turn off the phone
Press Volume up+ Home+ Power buttons. When you see the Samsung logo, release keys for half an second and then again press.
Your mobile phone will now reboot in recovery mode.

How to put Galaxy S in Download mode:
    Turn off the phone
Press and hold Volume down+, Home+ & Power button, keep held until a yellow triangle appears.
Your mobile phone will now boot into download mode.

edit: to flash firmware manually you will need to sign up to Samfirmware.com and read soem guides on this forum.

Hi! thanks for the quick reply. I've attempted both and it won't start either way... stays black...
but I think I know what happened... the battery went dead during the recovery... I had it attached to the PC and assumed it was loading via the USB... I'll charge it first and retry...

Don't be scared, how many handsets are sold and how many troubles have you read about regarding the device. If you have never updated the SGSII firmware then it is a must, just don't pull the cable out while in the middle of installing firmware.
As for updating I have always updated the phone manually using Odin, you should give it ago if you don't trust Kies.

Just have at least half full battery (preferably full) before flashing and as said don't pull the cable out. The whole process takes about 2 minutes.

It might be 2 minutes in theory, but after leaving the phone "updating" for over an hour with the dialogue box stating it was 0% complete. In error, I decided 0% was 0%, and it clearly was not.

I've now left it doing an "Emergency recovery" and after 7 hours it says it is 1% through. At that rate I will need to leave it for another 28 days!

    How are you updating?
Are you using a USB2 port?

iv got exactly the same problem, tried to charge the battry for 3 hours & then try to restart the phone in recovery mode, but it didnt work on the screen there is a mobile phone icon, a yellow triangle & a pc icon that comes on for a few minutes when the phone is getting charged, iv connected it via keys again but the update wont go through and comes up as an error, im on virgin mobile network & spoken to the customer services, they are sending me a parcel pack to send it back to them & have been told that i should hav the phone back in 5 working days but no guarantee of the data being recovered, i did infact choose the option to backup data on the server jst before i started the firmware update, but my luck .... , 1 more thing i would like to mention is the phone was getting extremely hot while charging around the camera lens area. If any 1 comes up with a solution .... plz update regarding what i should do abt my files if they were lost as im assuming the repair centre is gonna do a factory reset after/before the firmware update.

    Regards
    SyH
