How to tell if phone is locked to a provider?

A colleague of mine at work has a galaxy s with T-mobile and his firmware is very old.

How can I tell if his phone is locked to T-mobile?

I have forgotten how to check for this.

Unless he either got it from carphone warehouse or got it unlocked, it will almost certainly be locked to t-mobile. None of the t-mobile shops or their online store do unlocked handsets.

I checked it and it is totally unlocked.

Not sure where he got it from but it is T-mobile and is unlocked.

    He hasn't had it unlocked.

Put a different sim in it and try it to make sure it does work on other networks.

He may well have got it from carphone warehouses then as none of their handsets are locked and I believe they are the only company that does that. It's not something they like you to know cos you could buy a phone on payg really cheap and just put another sim in. That's what I always do. Lol.
