Use your own incoming text message notification

I am new here but was compelled to add this solution as I have seen several different suggestions on how to use your own incoming text message notification, none of which seemed to work for me, also they weren't exactly in easy to understand terms for those users who are less techy minded.
So here's my solution in easy to understand step by step fomat.

    1) First make sure you have the tune or song you wish to use on your phone.
    2) Select 'Application' from the Applications screen.
    3) Select 'My Files' - when the my files screen opens it will be shown on the top left as 'sdcard'
    4) Select the 'Media' folder
    5) Click the menu symbol bottom left and select 'Create folder'
    6) Call the folder 'Audio' and select it
    7) In this folder click the menu symbol and select 'Create folder'
    8) Call the folder 'Notifications'
    9) Now go to the folder that contains the tune or song you wish to use as the text notification
    10) Select 'Menu' bottom left, select 'More', select 'Move'
    11) Select the song/tune you wish to use and select 'Move'
    12) Next select the 'Media' folder, select the 'Audio' folder, select the 'Notifications' folder and then select 'Move Here'
    13) Go back to the screen that shows all your applications, select 'Applications' icon, select 'Messaging', select 'Menu' and then 'settings'
    14) Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and under 'Notification settings' select 'Select ringtone'
    15) Here scroll through the list and find then select the track you wish to use, make sure the 'green dot' is in the circle next to it, click ok

There you go, that should now be done.
One final tip, if this did not work straight away turn your phone off and then on again and it should now work.

You need to find the music file in My Files, not by opening it in the music player.

My music is stored on the external SD card, so in My Files I select the folder called external_sd then the folder under that called Sounds. If it's in an album, open the album so you can see the song (don't open the song), if it's a stand alone song it'll be at the bottom of the list in Sounds.

If it's a song you've downloaded direct to your phone it may be in the folder Download.

When you can see the song you want in the list, press Menu -> More -> Move (or copy if you only want to create a copy), select the song, then navigate back to the Notifications folder and select Move Here or Paste.

Gave this a try. Followed all instructions but the "messaging" app does not show in my "Applications" 1-4 screens - only as one of the four defaults at the bottom of the main screen showing the "Phone", "Contacts", "Messaging" and "Applications"... I've looked four times in the apps list and it doesn't appear there.

That said, if I opened the "messaging" app from the bottom four icons and then did select 'menu'/settings and scroll to the bottom and then under "Notifications" select ringtone I can then select the 'song' file.

Rather than do the 'move' file option from the menu [as described above by curlylad] I did 'copy' as described by Marshmallow.

You're right - whatever 3 icons you've picked to be alongside Applications in the dock don't appear in the app drawer. But it doesn't matter whether you open the app from a homescreen or have to go to the app drawer, it's the same thing.

here's another way, download zedge app in the market, there are cool ringtones/notificationtones and wallpapers there. I got my starcraft and metal gear solid notification tone there hehe it's cool. and you can also put in the zedge folder your personal ringtones and notif and when you set your tones it automatically lets you pick zedge or your preset tones.
