phone locks up

approximately every 4 or 5 days my phone will just freeze, usually on a black screen.
Initially I removed the battery to re-boot, however the last couple of times I managed to get it to reboot with a long power button push. This latest time it was frozen on the home screen but would not respond to anything other than re-boot.
Any ideas what may cause this?
what suggestions to remedy?

What have you installed? any 3rd party task managers or things like juice defender (battery saving app)?

What firmware are you on?

Flashing a new firmware could solve it, removing the conflicting app (if it is that) could help...gonna need more info from you to be able to answer....these phones are pretty good out of the box with minimal issues...its generally user error that creates issues

Hi, as far I as am aware, phone is unrooted.
only app for battery saving is "quick settings" and "task manager"
phone details as follows
ver 2.3.3
kern 2.6.35.7 - 19100 XWKE2-CL187606
root@DELL101#2 gingerbread.XWKE2
does this suggest that the phone is in fact rooted?
would have been before purchase!

I think it said the same on mine when I first got it, that's a very old firmware, mine had it I think and I got mine the first day it came out. First stop would be seeing if kies can update the firmware for you, might sort out a few issues.

Do what What mark22 said ...should resolve the issue

(If kies wont update, download the latest off this forum and flash through Odin - plenty of info about this on this forum)

Thanks for your advice. Can't get it to connect thu kies, just like many other posters.
Will have to bite the bullet and go via Odin.
I am an utter noobie, as you may have guessed, but I'll do a thorough study before proceeding, otherwise I'll track down an "expert" if I'm too nervous.
I did suspect that an upgrade of firmware may fix the issue.

I wouldn't be to nervous about using odin, it's what samsung use.
