    Laptop died, need replacement help!

    Hi all!

I know this is a phone forum site but as you're all techy people I was wondering what views and opinons you might all have (and it is in the off topic ). My loved (but unreliable) acer travelmate died after 4 hard years of being a workhorse. So, naturally I'm looking for a new laptop.... I've narrowed it down to 3-4 machines now after many hours of research.

    HP G6 - http://www.amazon.co.uk/G6-1061-Note...3016588&sr=1-1

    Samsung RV511 - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-15-6...3020703&sr=1-6

    HP G62 - http://www.amazon.co.uk/G62-105SA-No...3020772&sr=1-1

i'm REALLY confused on what to get to be honest, I know what I want, there's just so many choices and reviews everywhere and different models! I've heard HP machines have bit of a record of overheating? But then they look pretty nice ..... but then so does the Samsung and after their work on the SGS I figured you cant go wrong with them really. But then Acer do some pretty nice looking machines but my last one needed 2 HDDs a new motherboard and I had to fit new ribbon cables to the mointor eventually too. Dells range dont seem very impressive at the moment. I'm just confused! lol.

Any opinions or recommendations please feel free to link or advise..

I have a beast of a desktop for games and 3D stuff so it'll just be used for all my uni work and the usual office, music and so on, nothing too snazzy but I'm after something reasonably powerful, nice looking not too big with fairly decent battery life for around £450 ish tops?

I look forward to any replies as I'm baffled!

    Thanks! GG

My last laptop that I bought 8 years ago and still working good (Apart from the battery, but that's down to me) was just a cheap one, after the two named brand ones didn't last to long

My only input would be that HP laptops are the biggest pain in the a**e to replace parts, takes an hour or two extra to replace anything internally.

Hold your horses! You should aim for an i5 based system in my opinion, even at your price point. As I agree that the current Samsung batch are very good laptops, I've found an alternative RV511 that has a better CPU, more RAM and generally a better spec:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-RV51...3059492&sr=1-1

Worth the little bit extra, I say.

Bear in mind you can buy an extended Samsung warranty from the likes of laptopsdirect for a decent price once the standard warranty reaches maturity (say a month before it expires). Better than the warranties the likes of PC World and Amazon try to get you to buy.

Thanks for the input guys. I think I've been put off HP - I've seen and heard too many bad things about them from current users. I've seen that Samsung before but it was a bit over budget. Will have to see if I can scrape up some more pennies as being a uni student £££ are limited!

If it's £££'s you want to save, try...

    http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk

Alternatively, have you considered a netbook? The latest models are very capable and they're obviously very portable. Two good examples are:

    - Acer Aspire One D255 / D257
    - Toshiba NB550D

That'll save you a few quid and save on backache too...

Got mine from the Comet clearance website. Depends what they have at the time but may be worth a look.
I could be wrong, I usually am. (Because it's only a phone)

Hmmm, I'm not too fussed on netbooks and I think they'll struggle with some of the things I'm going to do. I've got a sandy bridge i5 2500k overclocked at 4.2ghz, 8 gigs of DDR3 @ 1600mhz and a Nvidia GTX 570 in my desktop so intense stuff will be done on that. Obviously I'm not looking for that on a laptop lol, just something mid range. I like the Sammy - Think I might go check one out at some point, make sure I like it
