New to Android & S2 - need help setting phone up as portable wifi hotspot

    Hi all,

I've bought myself a new S2 a couple of days ago and have since been scratching my head on how to get it to work as a portable wifi hotspot.

I have managed to tether it using the USB - don't ask me how - but I really need to get the wifi going ASAP.

My laptop (runs Windows XP) can find the network - it just won't connect to it. I'm wondering if it is because my laptop has WPA, and not WPA2 like the phone has? I've tried downloading a WPA2 "fix" from Microsoft but it says that it's older than what I have already so won't be used. Or am I barking up completely the wrong tree?

Any help really appreciated as the phone is no good to me if I can't use this portable wifi facility and I only have a couple of days left to return the phone!

Hello scooby75, welcome to the forum

I have no probs connecting via a Win7 laptop to my SGSI, so the technology works, at least for the SGSI.

So, you setup your wireless hotspot (Mobile AP for the SGSI) using WPA2 with a password and this is displayed as an available network on your laptop.

You request to connect to that network, enter the password, then what happens?

The WinXP update KB893357 is supposed to provide WPA2 functionality, I take it you've installed that?
I could be wrong, I usually am. (Because it's only a phone)

    Unhappy

    Hi and thanks for helping.

I've tried downloading that one but it says that my current system is newer than the fix and that there is no need to use it - I don't even get the option to do so! Even so, my laptop setting shows WPA but not WPA2.

I know it's not the phone as I've connected my PS3 with no problems at all to the wifi hotspot and it worked perfectly.

I have gone through all the different options available for connection on the laptop.

I'm now thinking there may be something wrong with the settings on the laptop. When I search for wireless networks, it does find my S2.

I then change settings, OK them and try again trying to connect. When it eventually does not (it either searches and does nothing or tells me that it is out of range), I go back into the settings only to find that they have changed again to Open and WEP with the wrong number of characters in the password field.

I have seen a forum which suggests that I uninstall the network card driver (I think - I'm not that technically minded) but I have no idea what I'm doing - can I reinstall it from the hard drive? Will that even work?

Thanks for the responses - sorry I'm later getting back but i've been away.

Well I've at least got the two talking to each other - sort of.

The laptop will now connect (it was to do with the card driver in the laptop - don't ask me!) but when I try to launch the internet I'm getting a DNS error. I take it that these are the setting in the internet browser? I'm using Google Chrome if it's any help.
