Unable to connect to mobile network

Hello there.
Got a problem with my SGS. Last night, while browsing the active applications/processes, i killed some of them. (Yeah, i know i am a baboon :P ) Since then, my phone won't connect to mobile network (cannot call, send texts, access internet).
When trying to manually select the network operator, Orange Romania in my case, it tells me that it is unable to select it, same on auto select mode.
Restarting the phone did not help. Removing the SIM card dind not help either. I even reset it to factory settings - no good.

Firmware: 2.2.1
Kernel:2.6.32.9
Build: FROYO.XFJS4

GSM disconnects: State: DcInactiveState disconnected with last try at **.** fail because No Error

You don't want to hear my answer Someone I know had this problem on a different Android phone and it required to be re-flashed.

Well, fortunately, it seems that my 9-10 years old SIM card died on me.
