Firstly with regard to the heat I would see if kies can find a firmware update and do it. If you are feeling a bit braver you can debrand the phone using the method described in one of the stickies. It definately should only lose 6-7% overnight if it's not used but this can mean setting the phone up correctly as there are certain samsung installed apps that seem to drain the battery at the moment. Some of these can be stopped but you need to root the phone to do that, again see the stickies. Also there are a couple of apps that save battery life, on is green power (free on the market), the other juice defender. You may want to give them a try.

A good screen lock is widgetlocker, a couple of dollars on the market, worth it though as it is very customisable and way better than that thing that comes with the phone.

Hi all, I've just received my Galaxy S2, the first android phone I've ever owned. I've been advised to charge the battery for several hours the first time. When I plugged in the battery charger the battery charging icon appears for about 1 minute and then the screen goes completely dead when the charger is plugged in! Every phone I've had since the mid 90s constantly shows a battery symbol charging throughout the charging process.

Is there something wrong with my phone or charger or does the Galaxy S2 not show anything on the screen when charging up?

    Many thanks in advance.

Push the menu button to bring the battery back up, I think it does this to stop screen burn

i am on Vodaphone & have just updated phone via Kies and its only gone to ke5.? can i not go to ke7 via Kies? or do i have to root the phone? i have been deleting all the rubbish(free/trial) apps & the one lighting up the bedroom yesterday was the Samsung demo app running constantly. ;-( so hopefuly i should last a lot longer today. is it recomended to root the phone to get the best from it?

Rooting does give you more options but you will have to set it back to stock firmware if you need to send it back under warranty. It's not hard to do though and most people here routinely route and flash entire custom firmwares which you may well want to investigate as well. As far as KE7 (there's KF2 for europe as well now) you may need to manually flash using odin see here.

As for the battery savers you only need to run one or they may conflict with each other. I think green power is a bit easier to set up for a beginner.

If you don't want to flash a custom rom then that method is the best way for you. If you have updated your firmware via kies then you will want to go to the link I provided to find the correct kernel to flash back over after rooting to get rid of the yellow triangle (not necessary). Also there are more up to date insecure kernels on xda as well as chainfires kernel here that you could just flash instead and automatically have root access plus some other very handy features such as clockworkmod.

I know that's a lot of information but now you can make a more informed choice. I'd go with chainfire's, just choose the kernel that matches your firmware version.

What brightness setting do you have your screen on? Personally I find auto too bright and turn it down manually.
