How to use SD Card (Android N00b)

I have a sneaking suspicion I'm being an idiot here...

The SD card was recognised by the phone (message "Setting up SD card" when switched on). I used Appmonster Pro to back up everything to the SD card, which it seemed to do fine.

Except there doesn't seem to be anything ON the SD card in Astro or Windows Explorer. Am I missing something obvious.

Also, I mainly bought the card to use with the camera - how do I persuade the camera to save to the SD card instead of the internal memory?

When you connect your phone to the PC you will need to connect it using Mass Storage mode, to check menu>settings>wireless and networks>USB settings> depending on which firmware your on, you will have 3 or 4 options. If your firmware is 2.3.3 you will have 3 options, if 2.2.1 or earlier you will have 4 options.
On 2.3.3 select mass storage, on 2.2.1 or earlier you can select either mass storage or ask on connection. Once connected the phone will be recognised as a removable drive and you can then browse the files on either the internal sd card or the external sd card.

Saving your photo's to your external sd card, you will need to go into the camera settings>bottom right of the screen is what looks like a cog wheel, tap on it, on the next screen tap the spanner, on the right it will say 1/2, tap the down arrow, storage is the one in the middle, tap on it and you then get the choice of phone or memory card.

The forum works with both Firefox and Chrome, I'm using Firefox right now.

Thank you! That was an enormous help! Now I know that I'm right. The SD card hasn't been the one used by either the camera OR Appmonster Pro. So I'm a bit stumped.

When I tap the Cog Wheel (which is on the top left of my screen, incidentally) there is no spanner. However, it is a scrollable list (which I missed before) and the second option from the bottom allows you to set the Memory card as the storage. So that one is sorted.

However, Appmonster was a little tougher. Had to figure out the path to the desired location on the SD card and type it in manually. How very primitive! (But at least the tip about USB storage allowed me to confirm I had it correct!)

Which SGS do you have 1 or II, if you have the II then that would account for the differences, I have the Galaxy S 1 and was using that as a guide.

kies isn't the best bit of PC software by any stretch of the imagination. Most of us use odin to flash new firmware, looks a bit scary to start off with but once you get used to it, it's pretty simple really.
