Can't hard reset my SGH-I897 Samsung Galaxy S

I am locked out of my phone and I am trying to hard reset my SGH-I897 back to factory settings, but I can't get it to work. I have tried pressing both of the volume up/down buttons while pressing power and releasing power and holding the volume buttons still but that didn't work. I've also tried holding each volume button individually and repeating the procedure. Does anyone know how I can get it to hard reset?

Hi, this forum is for the Galaxy S and Galaxy S II,

Did find this for you , more or less the same as you have been trying. There are some handsets where recovery mode is disabled. There is a fix for the Galaxy S over at the XDA developers forum, you may find a fix for your captivate to.

How to Sytem Recovery Samsung Captivate SGH-i897 Android Procedure:

To enter the Android System Recovery mode, follow these steps:

    1. With the phone turned off, press the Power key and
Volume Up/Down keys at the same time until the phone
    switches on.
    2. Once the AT&T logo appears, release the Power key while
continuing to press the Volume Up/Down keys.
    3. Continue to press the Volume Up/Down keys for at least 8
seconds, until Recovery mode is launched and the Android
    System Recovery screen is displayed.

    4. Release the Volume Up/Down keys.

    5. The following options are available:

    • reboot system now: this option turns on your phone.
    • reinstall packages: this option allows you to apply updates to your
    phone.
    • delete all user data: deletes all data from the phone.
    • delete cache data: allows you to delete all cache data such as log
    files.
    6. Use the Volume Up/Down keys to scroll up or down, then
use the Power key to make a selection.

Yeah, I guess that it is disabled for me then. Wish I there was a way to get into it.

Head over to the XDA Developers forum, I'm sure there is a topic on getting the 3 button combo working on the Captivate.

you can use adb to force your phone into download mode, for advanced users though im afraid, ive used it on a few handsets to force into download mode, works like a charm.
