Diagnose me: apps crashed overnight, now can't receive calls or lock screen

Hello. I was wondering if you kind people would help me out with an issue with my Samsung Galaxy S. Have sent an e-mail to Samsung product support but I kind of want to fix this now and don't know when/if they'll get back to me.
Anyway, last night I set my alarm as I normally do before bed and this morning I over slept by a disgusting amount because somehow all of my apps had spontaneously crashed while I was asleep! The force close notification kept coming up for a number of different applications before I was forced to simply turn it off. When I turned it on again a few seconds later, most of my settings had been wiped along with much of the data kept on the actual phone memory. Some stuff was still there, like all my apps, my connections and passwords, but my home screen was defaulted, as were my message tone, ring tone and input settings. Also gone were any phone numbers I had stored on the phone itself as well as all of my inbox messages.
So, I went into the settings to put my screen lock back on because I noticed that had been reset, too. I did the normal routine, picked the pattern, confirmed it and so on. But after I put my phone down and locked the screen, when I picked it back up again and pressed the home key to activate the screen, it was just unlocked. I didn't have to input the unlock pattern. However, when I went back into the settings to make sure they were all okay, it made me enter the unlock pattern to get into it! How odd.
Later some people attempted to call me, but all that came through was a message saying I had a missed call. When I called them back (am able to make outgoing calls and send and receive texts) they said that they had had either one ring or no ring at all and then it had gone straight to my message bank. I confirmed this by ringing my phone with my landline and had the same thing. To make sure it wasn't my SIM card, I took that out and put it in my old phone which still works and called that. Totally worked, no issues. Put it back in the Galaxy and nothing, no notification apart from the missed call message.
So that's weird, huh? Does anyone know what could be causing this and whether it's fixable by me or some specialist or whether I need to get the warranty out? So far I have tried numerous reboots, read the questions of some people with similar issues (one suggested that the 3G was interfering, so I made sure that was switched off and tried again... still nothing). I'm just saying this so people don't chime in with stupid suggestions like, 'it's your carrier' or 'turn it off then on again' or 'make sure you don't have auto-reject on' (I don't). Because obviously I wouldn't be posting this unless I had already ruled out those options.
If anyone could help me out I would so so appreciate it!! Other than this one issue I love the Galaxy S to bits.

Apps crashes could be due to the SD card corrupted. I suggest you backup all your data while you still can, then take out the external SD card to rule out the problems from that. If problem still exists, you could also try format Internal SD Storage and do factory reset. Of course this will clear all your data.

Give us more informations about your phone as well, is your phone rooted? Any Custom rom? What was the recent app you installed?

    Good luck

Hi, thanks for your reply. Some background info: I don't know what rooting/custom roms are so I guess my phone does not have that haha. I bought it unlocked. Before it crashed for the first time I hadn't installed anything new within the last couple of weeks.
Since I last posted the apps kept crashing semi-regularly - once every day or couple of days. I ended up doing a factory reset just to rule that out and also took out the SD card as was suggested. The phone worked fine for about three days! I did re-install most of my apps though. Just the usual stuff like Angry Birds, a currency converter, Facebook, Opera Mini, Appkiller, 3g switch...
Last night I was so confident my phone was fixed i decided to use the alarm again! Set it fine, went to bed and in the morning, lo and behold, it hasn't gone off and all of my apps have crashed. It seems to be the clock app or alarm setting that caused the crash. How odd....
Anyway, I was wondering if it would be worth my while to go to a Samsung repair place and see if they give me a new phone or whether they can fix it. It's only three months old.

And I've just had exactly the same happen to me. Could be coincidence, but I had just installed AndroidLost, and Wol Wake on Lan Wan apps.

But, still stuck not being able to receive calls. Wondering if upgrading from Froyo to Gingerbread would help??

Im having the same problem, it just crashes and i need to pull off the battery to work again. This happened 2 times and that 2 times i let the phone in the same place for about 4 hours, my living room floor (a shaggy carpet near a power strip), dunno if it is possible that it can be connected with static electricity). When i turn it on again all my msgs, calls were reseted as some settings like u said. I cant receive calls but i can make them. I still can send and receive msgs. Another problem that happens is that i cant access inet because my APNs just disapear! But i can still have access with wireless. I went to my operator tecnic assistance and they hard reseted the device and it worked, ofc i lost all my apps,etc.. I started all over again but 2 days later i forgot the phone at home in that same place...and it happened again...guess i have to do another hard reset and start all over again... again :/

    Unhappy

Same here. Phone likes to crash and to reboot then. I cleared everything by flashing a PIT file several times, it is like "format c:". After that, I tried several stock ROMS - 2.2.1, 2.3.4, 2.3.5 and 2.3.6, always with a "factory reset" afterwards. But it still happens often that the phone reboots itself. Sometimes it hangs in a boot loop, removing the battery helps then. After that, it boots again, but displays that "welcome to your new phone" screen again.

If that happens then APN settings are lost, the screen is default. Some apps work, some apps (which are all still installed) crash at startup, e.g. Opera Mobile. Uninstalling and installing helps.

    Any ideas?
