    kies disconnects on update

I'm trying to update my SGS using Kies. I've got the latest Kies Kies_2.0.0.11044_11_3.exe
running on WinXPPro (Service pack 3) and I've tried it on a laptop with Win7 Home. Same thing happens when I try to update the phone from Froyo. Kies connects and I go through the options to dpdate and it the looses the connection to the phone - and crashes normally.
    I've re-downloaded Kies and re-installed and re-installed the drivers - several times.
Any one got any tips? Can I try it on my MacPro at work?
    Thanks

All I can say is, don't use Kies.

I know it's supposed to be the approved method to update, but it really is £$*%.

I can highly recommend updating with odin. It's really very very easy once you get past the first attempt.

Just make sure the phone is unlocked (debatable point) and you have no lagfix installed.
I could be wrong, I usually am. (Because it's only a phone)

Some have reported their antivirus software interfering, do you use any Norton products?

May be worth turning off your protection for a few minutes whilst you try to upgrade.

Nope. That made no difference. I guess I could try the Odin route but does it invalidate the warranty? I'm sure there's loads of info on Odin on this site but if someone could give me the 2 second starter info (like where's the best place to download it), that would be great.
I may try Samsung or Orange or Carphone Warehouse suppport?
