    S4 Constantly lagging

    Hello,

I've had my Samsung Galaxy S4 for a number of years, since it came out actually, but I noticed within the last month, the phone has been lagging, A LOT.

The phone lags when I try to unlock it for use. I hit the home or power button and the screen quickly flashes on and goes off. I have to let it stay for a minute before it actually catches up with itself before I can unlock it and use it. Same when I try to lock it. I hit the power button and the screen freezes for a minute, and again, catches up with itself before locks and goes black.

It lags when I'm texting as well. The screen freezes and can't type anything, and again, have to let it stay for a bit before the phone catches up with itself.

Things to note or already tried:
    -Factory reset. Issues still remains
-Photos, videos, music are all on the SD card (32gigs, 5gigs left of space)
-Internal memory card has 3.9 gigs of space left.

What could be causing this issue and how can I solve it??

    Thanks!

May be an app causing issues?
Boot into safe mode and see if it still does it - if not try your apps one by one to identify the culprit.
If still doing it in safe mode I'd look at reinstalling your firmware.

I suspect it's an app but not sure which one or how to isolate the culprit. There's a lot of apps, and that's just the basic phone apps, let alone the ones I actually installed.

It happens periodically. It will work fine for 2..3 hours and then it's those 2 minutes where the phone seriously lags that's annoying, then it works again.

Safe mode will isolate all the stock apps from the ones you've added, so it's somewhere to start.
After that, remove any apps you don't use anymore (there's always some forgotten ones) as this will eliminate a few more.
After that, make a list of the ones you have left and remove them one by one until the phone stops lagging.

I did turn off all animations, but I noticed since I changed keyboards to the Gboard (Google Keyboard) the phone's lag time has reduced significantly.

Only time it lags is when I switch to the default Messaging app.
Asides that, it works again. Strange how a keyboard can cause all this?

Anything can cause it. Sometimes what you least expect.
At least with Android we have many alternative choices for apps.

Wondering if a solution or cause was ever found for this situation? My S4 suddenly started lagging intermittently when using the keyboard and texts take minutes to complete sending when they used to be near-instantaneous. Almost seems like something is hogging the processor. The music app also began acting squirrely, changing in the middle of a song randomly. TIA...appreciate any thoughts.

Update..using suggestions on previous responses I booted into Safe Mode. While experimenting one of the things I looked at was data usage of apps. The Weather Channel app had been using considerable data although I'd turned off everything I could find that works behind the scenes long ago and hadn't opened it in weeks. There was an app update a little while ago....uninstalled and everything is now working as it should. I've gotten rid of a lot of apps that I can access a comparable site via browser. I'm thinking the code isn't too tight on some of these things. YMMV.
