Don't suppose you've tried re-charging the phone, as that could stop the phone going into recovery and download mode. This is what happened to me a while ago

I wouldn't worry to much about your firmware, as you done what kies said and updated

That's a good point regarding the charging. I noticed the other day that my Samsung branded car charger would not even attempt to charge the phone with a flat battery. My mains charger and a USB lead in the computer would though. That could catch you out.

good suggestion......when i tried it, i charged the phone and tried again, battery level looked around three quarters full..
