Kies disconnects on updating firmware

Hi all

I really need your help on this. I have an unlocked SGS and had a popup on Kies yesterday asking me to update the firmware

Current Firmware PDA:JP5/PHONE:JP2/CSC:JP5 (H3G)
Latest Firmware PDA:JS2/PHONE:JS1/CSC:JS1 (H3G)

After I click on upgrade it shows a window asking me to backup the data (contacts, photos etc), There is an option to skip backup so I select this

As soon as I click this, the phone disconnects from Kies and reconnects again automatically. Windows 7 shows a popup saying Firmware upgrade stopped working.
Then a window pops up in Kies saying " Preparing firmware upgrade components ". This keeps on going until I shut it down in frustation, I kept it going for 2 hours yesterday.

I have windows 7 32 bit, Latest version of Kies which I have tried reinstalling with the same problem coming up again. I have tried umpteen times now. I have tried shutting the antivirus and firewall down without success.

I have previously upgraded to Froyo through Kies without any problem. I am at wits end what to do

Is there anyone else with the same problem,

I've never done a upgrade with the new version of Kies so I am not sure, have you tired it doing the backup to see if it still disconnects? Have 3 mobile released Gingerbread (Just seen on another thread its 2.2.1) Not sure if you are aware but it was pulled by Google at the start of the week for Vodafone and unbranded handsets.

Cant find anthing on 3's website regarding gingerbread update, but it is showing on Kies that it is available ??

Its a update to Froyo (2.2.1) to prepare for Gingerbread, try uninstalling Kies and then reinstalling

I have already tried uninstall of kies and samsung usb driver, restart computer and reinstall Kies, but did not work

I have the same problem - the upgrade process hangs on "Preparing firmware upgrade components" message until i shut it down manually (I left it for more than an hour). Whats wrong with it?

How are you connected to the internet? I have a version that when you connect through 3g USB dongle then kies is having a problem. When I uninstalled kies and samsung usb drivers and installed them back - during that installation my 3g dongle immediately became unrecognizable by the system so I had to physically unplug it, plug in again and connect to the internet. I have read somewhere a guy said that when he is updating through wifi everything is ok but with 3g dongle he has the problem of phone disconnecting. At this moment I cannot verify that version because I have only 3g dongle at home, I will try the update at work tomorrow.

Same problems here. I've been trying to update from Froyo to what I assume is gingerbread. I updated Kies and it found a new version of formware for my SGS but as soon as it gets to updating the phone it loses connecting with it. I wondered if it was because Launcher Pro or Advanced Task Killer was running but it keeps losing connecting (roght after it does a bacl up).
Any thoughts?

Yes I have been trying to update using a 3 usb dongle mobile broadband, is that the problem ??
Please let me know if you have success using Wifi and I will try at work as well

Yes! I have updated the firmware! Not wifi and not quite success but I have done it!

At my work the internet is through company's local area network. When I installed kies and usb drivers on my work computer the process of firmware upgrade just went further the usual point it disconnects. I was so happy that left my computer for several minutes and when I came back I saw an error message saying "could not load dll" or something like that. After that kies was disconnected from phone and phone hanged with "under construction"-like yellow triangle icon on the screen. I closed kies, opened it again and it said that i need emergency firmware recovery. Next it tells how to do that - unplug the cable, remove the battery, switch on the phone with power button holding down home+volume down, plug the cable back. After doing all that kies recognizes that a phone is connected and recognizes that it needs emergency firmware recovery. The recovery process then goes without errors, froyo 2.2.1 was installed "successfully". No app or data was lost, just the usual upgrade changes - alphabetical ordering of apps and the default screen widgets.

First I thought that nothing was upgraded - still froyo and not gingerbread, and kies was wrong saying that i have latest firmware however I didn't noticed the "1" digit - 2.2.1 and not 2.2 so i guess no gingerbread yet out on galaxy s.
