Question Samsung Apps app Notifications Issue

OK, had a Wave (which was great, a mini Galaxy S minus Android with an arguably better build).

Now, got a Galaxy S thanks to Mrs Yaffle and am perplexed by the Samsung Apps app.

    On the Wave...

    1. You get notification only if a Samsung App you have installed has been updated
    2. Tapping the "x updates available" message in the app takes you to a Downloads page
    3. The Downloads page shows all apps you've downloaded and shows updated apps at the top with an orange Update button next to them

That's all very logical and worked excellently.

    On the Galaxy S...

    1. I currently get 23 notifications - one for each Samsung App I haven't got installed, plus any I have installed that have been updated
    2. Tapping the "23 updates available" message in the app takes you to a Downloads page
    3. The Downloads page shows all apps you've either not downloaded or that have an update, with an orange Update button next to them

Hmmm... I know which system I prefer! The first one, as it's far more useful in case there are updates to the pre-installed apps.

Does everyone's Samsung Apps app work in this way or is mine defective? Re-installing made no difference, sadly.

Many thanks - and hello to everyone...

    Professor Yaffle

Mine is working differently to yours it seems.

When I start SamApps, mine shows the price next to each App (all free at the moment) rather than the word "Update". If I select an App it takes me to the download page for that App, and shows the word "Get" if it's not already installed, or presumably "Update" if it is installed but there is an update available.

This makes complete sense to me and I can't imagine how it could possibly more intuitive.

    I think yours is broken.

Goots, I have reinstalled it many times after reflashing firmware and it allways comes back with the available apps called updates. Everyone I know with this phone has the same.
It may be broken in that updates is the wrong word but the app works perfectly.
When you open the app there is a green box with the words Android Samsung apps in it. below that on all the SGSs I have seen it says some number of updates available then a list of apps. What does yours say?

Ah yes I see what you mean about the "available updates" thing.

When I open mine, I get this page first...

then when I select an App, I get a "more info" page like this...

then if I click on the "Get" button, I get this...

obviously the next click would actually install the App.

I never use Samsung Apps so I don't have any installed.

Edit: I just clicked the "17 updates available" thing and it did indeed take me to a downloads page. I then clicked one of them, and it downloaded the App to the phone and asked if I want to install it. I said no. If I now go back to the front page of Samsung Apps, it still says "17 updates available" but if I click it now, one of them (the one I selected earlier) says "Install" rather than "Update" next to it. It seems in this case the the word "update" really means "update your phone so the app is ready to install" rather than "update the app" itself.

Kinda makes sense in a way.

Thanks, guys for the responses. I've no doubts Goots knows his onions but the latest happenings in my haunted Samsung Apps app seem to add further evidence that it's well and truly confused.

My 22 updates of Wednesday miraculously reduced to 13 yesterday. And, furthermore, none of the "updates" appear elsewhere in the Samsung Apps app (e.g under Categories or if you Search for them). The three I had updated (Task Manager, Photo Editor and Video Editor) no longer appear on the Downloads page accessed via tapping the "13 updates available" banner - which at least makes sense. There are 30+ Samsung Apps under Categories on top of those that exclusively appear on my Downloads page.

I query the terminology argument as Samsung evidently know the meaning of Update in the aesthetically identical Bada version of Samsung Apps. If the Android version is intentionally different then I would at least expect it to make sense. If these 13 updates are just new apps, why haven't I got about 44 updates? (that's the apps that appear in Downloads + all those in Categories). In addition, if not updates, why do they appear on the Downloads page only and not elsewhere in the app?

I suspect only the Samsung developers really know the true answer to this one. I'll email them and post back here what they say (if anything).

    Professor Yaffle.

Things are moving in the right direction. Today, the notifications are down to 9 (without any intervention from me or installing/uninstalling anything). The number of apps in the store has increased to 33 from 31, with Asphalt 5 now correctly appearing in the Games category (well worth a download, by the way). Here's hoping the notifications keep decreasing until they get to none and thereafter only appear if legitimate updates exist. I know folk who haven't used Samsung Apps on Samsung's other platforms will take some convincing that it's defective on Android (well, my phone at least) but I thought I'd update this thread anyway for completeness. Just ignore my obsessive tendencies...

Loving the phone, by the way...

Phew, bet the hours just fly by in your place, eh?

Why not stop faffing with your Samsung Apps and go and download some proper fun apps from the market. You're wasting so much time obsessing that you're really missing out on the full capabilities of your new Galaxy S.

    Just my opinion.
