GPS needs data connection. sat imagery is OFF

    hi guys.

when ever i try and use my navigation i get a warning 'data connection lost'. satellite imagery is off. everything works fine when i'm connected to wifi at home and always works a treat. but that's no good to me as i need the navigation for driving.

i switch off sensor aiding and wireless networks because i need the gps to be as accurate as possible, GPS is on.

i also get the 'waiting for location' and 'searching for GPS' for a short while followed by 'getting driving directions' which constantly stays on because i cant get a GPS fix.

Using GPS test the phone can see 9 sats in view and 9 in use with 4 SNR's at 40. the rest at between 20-30.

I'm in Scotland and today is almost cloudless, which really shouldn't affect things anyway.

cheers guys for any advice....oh...and i'm on unlimited date.

google requires data for their gps, if you turn it off you wont be able to use their nav.. youd have to look to another app if you dont want to use data..

I was lead to believe google navigation was free, this is one of the reasons why i bought the phone.

It is free, but it downloads the maps as you drive along any given route. Maps are not stored on the phone. This is why you need data switched on which in turns means you will need a data plan with your network.

went on a 50 min journey earlier and the navigation worked as it should (or even better) even with sat imagery on, except when i strayed from the recommended route it took about 10 minutes to re-route me. all in all it worked better than i thought. the only fault is the stupid voice on the thing. anyway, she (mrs google) gave us a good laugh with her interpretation of street names.

It is well known that Google navigation and the GPS are not great, but if you use a 3rd party navigation app like Copilot live 8 it is a lot better. I use Copilot live and it is very good, I have never had any problems with it. You can buy Copilot live from the market for about £19.99
