No, having Root is like being the administrator of your phone in that you can now access files that a standard (non rooted) user can't even see.

Clockworkmod recovery is a recovery console that has many advanced options, one of which is flashing zip files to your phone which haven't been "signed" as official by Samsung.

The thing is, one of the ways you can get CWM Recovery on your phone is by having Root access, and installing an App called ROM Manager LINK HERE. This App needs Root permissions to run, hence the requirement for Rooting the phone first. So when you run the ROM Manager App, there is an option there to "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" which replaces the stock recovery console with the CWM one

Once you have CWM Recovery installed, you can (amongst many other things) use it to install stuff from .zip files, one such thing being Darky's ROM.

i'm a complete novice recently upgraded to froyo, but am really tempted with darkys rom, my big questions are how much better is it and is it worth the risk of screwing my phone up ?
