Galaxy S Newbie - help and advice required please :)

Hi there - Galaxy S newbie here - actually scratch that....Android newbie.

I am soooo glad that i've come across this forum as this baby is going to get some getting used to, so apologies in advance for the loads of questions in the future. I've just traded in my very reliable, but aged, 2G samsung phone for a new shiny 'S' model but I am having problems with the internet connection when viewing pages / android market. Basically, my speed switches between HPDSA and 3G but for some reason I commonly experience Web page not available / time out errors. T-Mob who I am with, say that the signal strength for my area is excellent and didn't offer a reason as to why this would be happening. I was wondering if anyone else has / is experiencing this and are there any solutions to the problem?

    Cheers

    Big Fish

I get this too for some strange reason (Also T-mobile), sometimes just closing the browser works if not I restart the phone, I believe its down to their network/server and drives me nuts.

Does this happen at certain times/places.

If the signal is right on the fence between 3G and HSDPA, it's the switchover and handshaking that is causing the problem. During that handshake period there is no data flow, so the browser sees no network availability and reports it as "Unable to view webpage".

A good 3G signal is great. A good HSDPA signal is even better. Too good for 3G and not quite good enough for HSDPA absolutely sucks and is useless. What we need is a toggle to restrict it to one or the other.

I take it when the 'h' shows instead '3g' then the signal is HSDPA? If so I get a HSDPA signal quite often around where I work, not that it's there long enough to matter.

I'm a lazy git, I should check the manual

Yeah on the SGS you get just signal bars when you have data mode off, or "G" (GPRS), "E" (Edge), "3G" (3G) and 3G+ or H (depending on your rom - for HSDPA) when data mode is on.

We need some sort of toggle to restrict it to 3G networks by choice, coz the switchover between 3G and 3G+ is a pain in the a$$ .

Thanks for all the replies. Very helpful. I've decided to run with wi-fi at home (when the majority of issues occur) but at least it works elsewhere so I know it isn't a problem with the phone. a toggle sounds like a great idea....i think I might email samsung to see if they could maybe issue a patch to enable this.

    Hey Gents,

This is a way to disable HSPDA entirely and should only allow 3G to be active.

    Excellent find Pidz

This hack is also available in the latest version of SGS Tools, under the "Secret Codes" area.

    Hi to all,

When at home i rarely get 3G symbol, mostly H symbol, but i never ever get more than one bar for the network,
most of the time theres none, although i always receive mails, calls etc, sometimes mails take a couple of minutes
to send, away from home no problem, i thought having a bad signal might change the network to 3G or Edge,
    any thoughts.
Ps sorry for jumping in on some elses thread
