Angry How can I customise the text alert tone for my Galaxy S?

Can anyone explain how to customise the text alert tone for the Galaxy S? I'd like to use an mp3 of my choice as I used to do with my Nokia N95 8Gb phone. I have seen some answers on other websites that say to create a folder in the root of My Files called Media and in that to create a subfolder called Notifications. All you do then is to copy the mp3s you need into the Notifications folder and when you go to Messaging Settings you should be able to see the new sounds in the Notification settings area presumably under the Select ringtone section. However whenever I try that all I can see are the Samsung supplied sounds. What am I doing wrong?

In order to show your custom mp3 tune for notification sounds, you need to put them in /SDCard/media/audio/notifications.

note: SDCard is the phone's internal sdcard.

I use Handcent SMS, it has the settings for choosing ringtones.

Many thanks to all of you for your help. It works now but the one crucial piece of information that was missing was that you have to reboot the phone after the new files have been added!
