Question Anyway to select Car Dock Mode without a car dock?

    Hi,

Looks like a great website this!

This is my first post here - did a search but could not find the answer - apologies if all ready answered...

Using the Samsung Galaxy S with a generic car dock is there any way to manually select the Car Dock mode as described on the Google Navigation site?

    Thanks!

I too would like the answer to this one.. Or an idea of where I could get a pukka dock (though I'm sure it will be too expensive and offer no additional fintionality over the generic on I currently have..) How does it trigger the 'car mode' anyway?

I was just about to ask as well. I know that HTC use a shorted out USB pin and OEM Car charger for theirs. Others use a magnetic switch and a magnet in the mounts (different positioning for different mounts. Car, Home, Media etc.) So what does the SGS use ?

ooo so does that mean we have to wait until Samsung's specific car mount is available in the uk? or is it already available as I only seem to be able to find it on US sites. Seems a bit bad to release a phone when one of the main reasons I bought it for I cant use it for! Or am I totally misunderstanding? (as I said, complete technophobe!! :-))

As far as I can find out it is the special USB pinning that triggers the car dock app. The official OEM dock says it does this and will shortly be available. Price is not bad considering it incorporates a USB charger as well.

you need to download the apps from the market, if youre using the international version, my market or market enabler(root), set to t mobile and search or if you are a vbrant or captivate user then just search for "samsung desk home" and "samsung car home". Im currently using tasker to turn on desk home whenever i plug in my charger on my nightstand, im assuming you could do the same to turn on car mode when you plug in your car charger, or just put a shortcut on your home screen! hope this helps

There is a difference though I believe and that the pinning actually keeps the screen on permanently whereas starting the app manually allows the screen to go to sleep. Is this last bit correct ?

yeah it does go to sleep, but im fairly sure you can set display to never sleep whilst charging.
EDIT: settings > applications > development > stay awake

wonder what mock locations is? maybe pretending its in a dock?
