Yeah flashing new firmware is indeed a scary business. It does get easier on the nerves the more you do it, but it's never completely without its scary moments

Shame about your Vol key being bust - if that worked it would take some of the pressure off

I have a strange problem since doing this: now when i connect the galaxy s to the PC it comes up as being a CD drive and a memory card reader LOL but neither give me access to the phone?

Apart from above the phone runs 100% better than it ever did, when you see the award wining advert on the TV it used to drive me nuts as the phone just lagged and lagged and lagged it nearly met the ground with some force a good few times.

    @Goots:
Man, many many thanks for your walk through! It revived my phone after a previous attempt to upgrade from 2.2 to 2.2.1 (I9000XWJS5) from samfirmware.com locked up my phone into a 'vibrating S-black' boot loop. Youre the best!! My main reason i wanted to upgrade for, was the terrible keyboard lag and lockups after upgrading to 2.2 through Kies..

Does anyone have any good experience with upgrading into any version 2.2.1, which solves the lag and lockups?

Keep up the good work mate!!

Edit: i noticed that the H/3G data connection does not work anymore, except directly through wifi. I will have to dig into this forum (i'm a member since.. wel this morning) if there is any solution, but if anyone can write it down in 10 secs, please do

I know JPY is a good, solid version of 2.2.1 but I'm running a Custom ROM based on JS5 now and it's amazing

I would imagine your data connection problems are just down to APN settings which can be manually edited.

If you look at Settings > Wireless and Networks > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names... you might need to create a new APN in there using data from your providers' website, and tell your phone to use that.

    Cool

Dude, thanks! You were right it was just a matter of tappingin the right provider data, which they provide on their website (Vodafone). Works like a charm now!

Well up till now JPY is a huge improvement over what i had, no lockups or keyboard lags. I haven't tested GPS yet.

Thanks again and cheers! Keep up the good work !

#Curiosity edit: the custom rom based on JS5 you're using.. what advantages does it have over JPY?

Remember the huge improvement that occured when switching from JPO to JPY? (OK maybe you don't...)

Well this is the same leap, from JPY to Custom JS5 (Darky's v9.3 beta 1)

Question Samsung Froyo to 'Vanilla' Froyo and other Q's

Hi Goots From a fellow Welshman

I hope you or anyone else here can advise as I've just bought a SGS because of this great community.

My SGS has an Orange SIM in it but I believe it's unbranded as I bought it from an online store not affiliated with Orange and I had to choose the carrier in the phones settings.

The 3 button recovery mode works out of the box

The firmware on the phone is as follows:
    PDA:I9000XXJPY
    PHONE: I9000XXJPY
    CSC: I9000XAJPY
    BUILD INFO: 2010.12

I'd like to "upgrade" (at least initially) to 'vanilla' Froyo and not this Samsung branded stuff (There is no trace of Orange software on the phone).

    And now onto the questions:
    1) Is the change to 'vanilla' Froyo possible by following the steps in the first post and if so, from which step?
    2) Do I need to root the phone and if so how?
    3) I have few of my own apps on there (no data to back up yet) but what program would you advise to backup with first?
    4) I eventualy expect to go to Darkys ROM, is there a ROM manager you'd recommend?

Thanks for any help thats given

    edit:
    a) Managed to root using Z4Root,
    b) I have 3e recovery mode so followed http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...9&postcount=12
but the outcome was this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...7&postcount=87
    c) Z4root then said I no longer had root access and crashes when I try to re-apply as does Root Explorer and Astro

Help Would be most welcome as my phone vibrates and any started app has to be terminated. Perhaps I need to go straight to Darkys ROM to recover this mess?

If there is no trace of Orange software on the phone then you are as "vanilla" as you're gonna get I'm afraid. If you're after the raw Android look, I don't think that's available on the SGS, I've never seen it anyway.

Is the change to 'vanilla' Froyo possible by following the steps in the first post and if so, from which step?
    See my answer above

Do I need to root the phone and if so how?
You don't actually *need* to Root the phone, but the benefits are quite impressive. There are a few threads on here about Rooting, and it will depend which firmware you are running as to which method you use. Also, see the next comment..

I have few of my own apps on there (no data to back up yet) but what program would you advise to backup with first?
I'd go for Titanium Backup *needs Root

I eventualy expect to go to Darkys ROM, is there a ROM manager you'd recommend?
As you (hopefully) do your research on flashing firmware, you will learn about something called CWM (ClockWork Mod). This is the best "ROM Manager" really (although there is a very good app of the same name which is worth checking out) but your best bet regarding the installation of Darky's stuff is to do some reading on his own forum, starting with THIS THREAD RIGHT HERE.

EDIT: Sorry for the delay in replying, I work stupid shifts and while I do get notifications of posts, I can't often reply to them when I'm in work.

Either that or reflash stock JPY via Odin.
