Thread: How to use Odin to upgrade to Froyo from Eclair

    JP2 to JPO?

I tried the update following the instructions when i ran odin i got PASS! but when the phone reboot i got the error "E: can't mount /dev/block/stl11 (invalid argument)" when i restart the phone the galaxy logo would run but then the screen would go black and nothing else and the bottom lights would come on if i tapped them.

I then ran the second part of the tutorial to JPO and got PASS! but the same problem as above.. I followed the tutorial to the letter and thought i had completely buggered my phone.

So i then found another tutorial that would flash to JP2 so i followed that and fortunately it worked and the phone was alive again

What is the difference between JP2 and JPO

If i follow the tutorial again will it work from JP2? or does anybody know why the phone did what it did even though i got PASS!

Main reason for flashing is because im on Orange (UK) and the update does not seem to be available and i dont want to wait any longer

Any help would be greatly appreciated as it would be nice to be on the latest release.

    Thanks

I'm starting to wonder if some code put in the bootloader by the network provider detects if their bloatware has been removed in the main firmware, and causes problems if it has

Regarding the reflash, you would be able to put JPO straight over JP2 without going to JM8 first, but I'm not sure what the details of JP2 are compared to JPO and I can't really find out atm as I'm... er.... on the work PC and shouldn't even really be on here

have checked the forum but can't see anything on icons disappearing. I did a factory reset after updating but Angry Birds, Labyrinth/Tilt and Radiant keep disappearing from my homescreen? All my apps were installed after the F.Reset?

edit: Apps had been moved to external sd card which caused problem.

If you use the firmwares which I linked to in the tutorial, it will put you on the current latest 2.2 firmware for the UK (JPO). I presume you are in the UK? After doing this, Kies will say you are already using the latest firmware if you try and upgrade. This will not stop you getting future upgrades, if anything it will make them available to you earlier, because this firmware isn't network branded, meaning that you will get the firmware when Samsung release it, and you won't have to wait for your network provider to apply their junk to it.

You need to root your phone, try searching the app market for RYANZA'S ONE CLICK LAG FIX. That app has a built-in rooting/unrooting function. After that you need a file explorer that works at root level to back up your /efs folder. I highly recommend ROOT EXPLORER. It's a paid app but totally worth every penny. (Well, every cent.)

I don't think it matters if its rooted as Kies just looks at your firmware version so it would update it, you'd have to re-root the phone afterwards though.....if you apply a Lagfix this needs to be removed before whether you're using Kies or Odin to update the phone.....you risk screwing your phone up if you don't!

Yep, JF5 to JM8 will be fine. Make sure you go over the tutorial before you actually start, so you have an idea of what to expect.
