How to mark texts as read?

I can't seem to get the SMS notification icon to disappear lest I actually click the yellow box for the text in a threaded SMS view, to go to the black screen which renders the text in white writing.

It's a pain. Can't the phone just acknowledge that, if I've read the foot of the threaded view, I've read the text?

Are you having more than one Message app in your phone? If so you need to switch off one of the app's notification.

I'm not sure if I have the same problem or a different one. Ever since I received a message from my friend who was out of the country at the time, my phone has read that I have a txt. When I get a txt from someone, it says I have two. I have tried deleting the messages, deleting the friend, reading all the messages, but nothing works.
    Any ideas?
