Question Should I buy Desire HD or Galaxy S?

    Hello there :-)

I'm currently an owner of Samsung I8910 Omnia HD, and I swore never to buy a Samsung phone again, until now. I was considering buying a Desire HD, but now I'm not sure anymore. I've heard about alot of problems with the plastic covering the memory and SIM-card slot. It breaks easily. And the battery stamina is poor.

Is it the same with Galaxy S as it is with I8910? Do you need cocked ROMS to get the most out of it? I know Samsung released a Froyo firmware just now, but is this something they do on a regular basis?

Am I crazy to even be considering buying a Samsung phone again?

You can use a cooked Rom but at the moment firmwares have been released unofficially left right and centre so a cooked Rom will be a better bet in a month or so.

As for getting the most out of the Galaxy S there are a few ways of to do this

Best bet is to try them both and see which feels better

As a Galaxy S owner, I am thinking of selling and getting a Desire HD?

    Main reasons:

I want decent GPS. My Galaxy S is terrible and pretty unusable. This also makes some of the apps they advertise useless, such as Layar, Bump etc.

I find me handset pretty slow and laggy at times. Samsung are always slow and seem to be the last to update the firmware!

    Kies software is awful.

Desire has bigger screen (not as bright i know) 8mp camera+flash. Galaxy camera is pretty unusable once the sun goes down!

Thank you for responding. I'm just afraid buying this phone is going to be another I8910 story for me, and I don't want that.

No you are not crazy in considering another Samsung phone. They're really trying to pull through - this is one of their first epic devices.

As for Gal S vs Desire HD. I think one of the quick questions you can ask yourself is, do you want a bigger brick? GalS is pretty thin, and the Desire HD is slightly bigger. The screen quality isn't as good as the GalS. And, as for updates and fixes, well, manufacturer release or not, there are plenty of people working on it. The only BIG difference between GalS and Desire HD worth considering - the 8mp camera you get. Give it some thought. =)

I've got Galaxy S and a headache since I've had the phone. Starting legal battle with T-Mobile to replace it with most likely Desire HD. DO NOT BUY GALAXY S IF YOU NEED GPS FOR ANYTHING. If you like it just for Super Amoled, and don't use the phone much, you might consider it. Especially if you want to go grey soon.

For me 4" is the maximum screen id go for in a mobile, but if your looking for quality components and good phone support get the desire HD, your best bet is to visit a phone shop and try both phones out and see what suits you best for you needs.

What Firmware are you running? When I was on JM1 the GPS worked but wasn't that great. I updated to JP6 and it was much much better. Updated again to JPO and now it's bang on and I mean totally spot on! I bought a GPS Bluetooth module to work my co-pilot when I was running JM1 and that locked on to satellites within seconds and was absolutely accurate to approx 1 metre! I still use my GPS module to save on battery power as GPS can be draining

I too came from the I8910 but wasn't sure about the Galaxy S as some specs seemed like a downgrade but I decided I wanted Android and was going to go for the Desire but once again the Samsung beat the HTC for what I wanted (Watching Movies and Internet).

The biggest problem for me is it is more complex to update (upgrade) compared to other phones. Ie: I need to use windows instead of from my Linux machine
