I am having the same exact problem. I am wondering if I am covering a sensor with my hand? if you get an answer please let me know! Thanks
I have the Galaxy S, the one with only volume control and locking buttons as physical buttons, when i enter a phone call the screen turns completely off including the non-physical buttons. Basically it turns the phone off when I am in a phone call. whether i shake the phone, use KeepScreen, wave my finger over the sensor, have no screen protector, and no case It still turns itself off. in order for me to exit the call i must remove the battery or make the other person hang up.
settings >accessability > powerbutton ends call, does NOT work.
settings>applications>development>stay awake, does NOT work for me either.
I just did another factory reset, and the problem persists. any help? aside from getting a new phone?
Mine does this and I do not have a case or screen protector. I have upgraded all of the firmware/ software repeatedly. I do find that I can get the screen back when i open the slide out keyboard. But it would be nice to know what's causing this issue. I also noted that the screen black out even if I have the phone laying on the table with nothing covering the proximity or light sensors...

What phone do you have?
There are two reasons for the screen to black out.
1. Screen timeout adjustable in Settings >Display
2. When held to ear the proximity sensor kicks in.
Proximity can be turned off in Settings > Phone
