I'm so new to all this - I haven't even purchased the phone yet!

Hi there - I am looking for a little advice before I splash the cash for a new 'SGS'. I've done a lot of research & looked at a few phones that are on the market & this one strikes me as being among the best. I'm hesitating as I keep reading about this 'Froyo' update which is going to 'fix' all the problems with the GPS not working & Lag fix - how would I know if it needed 'Lag fixing'.

I'm thinking of buying the phone from Vodafone or Orange as all warranties (I assume) will be with them.

Question: Roughly what does 500MB or 750MB give me in terms of 'Data'. I won't be downloading music or video although I expect I'l buy a few 'apps' straight away. I do plan to use the device as a replacement to my TomTom SatNav using Google Maps as they are free - (another assumption) ?? Hopefully Flash 10.1 will let me view the short video clips that you sometimes see in online newspapers.

    Any comments would be welcome.

Hi kal0101, welcome to the forum!

I'm hesitating as I keep reading about this 'Froyo' update which is going to 'fix' all the problems with the GPS not working & Lag fix - how would I know if it needed 'Lag fixing'.
For me, GPS is alot better in Froyo but still not up to some people's standard . About Lagfix, it depends how you feel about the phone really, some people found it is necessary some people don't, when you start feeling your phone can't keep up with your finger, it might be a good time to have a lagfix.

Roughly what does 500MB or 750MB give me in terms of 'Data'
It is really hard to say depends on how you use your phone. Even if you are not downloading music or files, you can still easily exceeds that by just viewing a few youtube videos, check your facebook, twitter and other social networks. I suggest you should check out this thread, it should give you a good idea in that area.

Thank you guy's - This is really good. I was wondering if I should wait before purchasing until ,say , Orange are retailing the phone with the froyo update present on it as I also read that Samsung Kies can be pretty unreliable. Having said that I really want the phone sooner rather than later. If I can tap into the wealth of your knowledge & resources then maybe I should just go for it now.

Having come from an Iphone I can say this is the first phone in a long time that I cant put down! There is always something new with it (and I have bricked it twice!) It bounces back though, Kies was to blame both times. You can really make it your own, you will love it.

Thank you for taking the trouble to reply. May I ask another question- So when I buy this phone, should I buy from a network provider like Orange or should I buy an unlocked phone ? what's the 1st thing I should do, ROOT it ?

After reading more this evening I read that many network operators (Vodafone, Orange etc...) install many extras along with OS upgrades which actually do more harm than good. How can I bypass all this unhappiness that so many people seem to suffer from?

    Kind Regards

I bought my phone outright (so I could get an unbelievably good loyalty tariff) so I get the 2 year Samsung warranty then after that nothing. Though I will have probably moved on by then anyway...

Rooting the phone is a must imho, there is so much good stuff out there that only works on a rooted device.

I bought mine from the Carphone Whorehouse as a Pay As You Go handset on o2. You will have to buy it from a network provider because Samsung don't sell direct to the public (phones anyway) but there is less chance of it being network locked if it is a PAYG handset.

If you get a chance to play with the handset in the shop, open the phone dialer and enter *#7465625# this will tell you if your phone is network locked.

Love the reference - 'I bought mine from the Carphone Whorehouse as a Pay As You Go handset on o2' I think you are about right on that observation!

So (in theory) I have bought my phone brand new (£421.83) SIM free & unlocked. Presumably the next step is to ROOT it. Is it then a case of going off to Samsung Kies to apply the Android 2.2 Froyo update? Then find a network provider with a SIM only contract? And then, off to the Internet to buy all the crazy apps that are out there? OR - am I missing a vital piece of the puzzle as yet unknown to me?

    Thanks for the advice Goots!

Well you don't need to be rooted to get the FroYo update, so that's the first thing you should do.

Then you add your google account, set up your gmail, import all your contacts etc...

Then you think about rooting and stuff.

You will be suprised at the sheer amount of really decent free apps available. I've only bought a couple and they are "Superuser" ones for managing ROMs and stuff.

Even Angry Birds is free on Android which is one in the eye for iPhone users
