Start by learning to use the search feature of this forum

    1) Check if 3 button recovery mode works, if it doesn't, get it working.
    2) Make sure you didn't skip step 1.
    3) Root the phone (many apps do this, including RyanZA's One Click Lag Fix).
    4) Back up your current ROM using ROM Manager.
    5) Learn about custom/beta ROMS.
    6) Go crazy

Custom Roms are just that, A Rom that's been personalized to the owners liking. Really its just like a branded Rom from the operator but usually with less ****.

You can flash it to another firmware, just search and make sure you have the 3 button combo

The end part of a firmware file, JG1, JM1, JP1 ect ect. Their is a post somewhere that emplanes the meanings of them.

JG* is on Android 2.1 I believe
    JP* is on Android 2.2

Thanks!!! That clears things up a little.

Anyone have any recommendations on where to learn about ROM's and flashing? I posted a thread about it but no responses.
