    Connecting to laptop

I would be very grateful for some advice before I send my brand new Galaxy S ( GT-I9000) back to T Mobile.
I have tried to connect the phone to both my Dell laptop and Samsung notebook, both running Windows 7. ( have formatted both int and ext SD cards in device)
    a) if I connect the phone as Mass Storage the 2 new drives are recognized and assigned letters but it looks like they are recognized as card readers ( ie waiting for a card to be placed in) rather than hard drives. In essence the Device Manager shows them as hard drives but otherwise I am not able to use them.( ie Read/ write)
Any attempt to place files on them prompts a message : please insert card in drive G, F.etc
    b) if I connect as Kies, with or without Kies started ( have Kies latest vs by Samsung automatic download) again two things happen:
    - in Kies I have been able to copy to the SC card a few files after which Kies stalled and stalled it stayed ever after..
    - without Kies running the int and ext cards ARE fully recognized as drives and I can read their content and SOMETIME write on them. I have not been able to copy photo/music files on them as it stalls whenever it pleases...sometimes I get a message saying : your file will be copied but may not be able to be read by the device which is c..p as these are simple jpg and mp3 files..

The problem is identical on both Dell laptop ( Windows 7 Home) and the Samsung (!) notebook N110 ( Windows 7 Starter)
Both above work with no problems with the same SD cards in my Nokia 5800 Express Music and Ovi.

So at the moment I am not able to transfer files between this phone and any of my laptop and notebook.

Sorry for long text but I cannot believe that both my PCs are wrong and Samsung is right..if anybody experienced same problem I would be extremely grateful for some guidance, many thanks

Many thanks for your reply. I did spend an hour or so with Samsung on the phone and yes, they did tell me to click MOUNT on the phone after connecting via USB
This temporarily solved the problem of seeing the int and ext phone cards and being able to use them. However the connecting behaviour is random..sometimes MOUNT works but sometimes the option to click MOUNT is not even there..
When MOUNT works and the drives are visible and workable the following problem occured : whilst manually copying files or sync via either Kies or WMP the file transfer to the device starts, goes on for while and then stops forever after which the device switches off and dies ( ie needs reboot not just normal start)
Samsung helped me to install phone USB drivers after which the drivers failed to install properly on both my PCs ( the error was Bluetooth Peripheral Device not found)
At this point Samsung told me that the device firmware might be wrong and that I need to have the phone replaced.
At this point I have decided to send this phone back and wait a few years until Samsung sorts these problems.
I may be wrong and it may be that just this phone was defect as I have other Samsung items such as notebook and plasma tv which work absolutely fine..
It just bothers mea lot that such a simple thing as mass storage access did not work first time..who knows what else is buggered ?

If you just want to transfer files and you have Wi-Fi, then use this: http://www.appbrain.com/app/swiftp-f...ver/org.swiftp

I did manage to connect my phone to the laptop once upon a time, but now I've forgotten how I did it. I only ever use the above tool now anyway.

thanks for you reply-and for your idea. i didnt word my question right, sorry. what i should have asked was has anyone solved that problem? i would like to connect to a pc, and open the internal sd and the external sd i put in as if they were usb keys, and simply transfer from my desktop to both at the same time-i would like to use the usb connection. thats the way i've been doing fo a while now, however i will look into what you suggested.
the point though, is why does this happen? and did it happen to you? i know you dont use that method but, if you have the time, could you check? i wonder if its just certain phones or the entire galaxy s series, because havent seen anyone else complain about it-on the forum. anyway, thanks for the idea-gonna try it now

I'll try and remember correctly. What I did was download and install Kies (for the drivers only). In Settings -> About Phone -> USB connection, I've checked "Ask on Connection", although "Mass Storage" works too. Then connect with the USB cable. It should acknowledge by asking what you want to use it for. Click "Mass Storage". Then pull down the notification bar and select the USB thingy, and press "Mount". It should connect with the computer now. I don't use Kies in this process at all.

If that doesn't work, then try enabling USB debugging mode before connecting with the cable. This is in Settings -> Applications -> Development. Connect to the computer, and it should do some driver thingies. If it hasn't established a connection, then disconnect, switch off debugging mode, and connect again.

hey is there somewhere i let them-the forum administrators- know you helped me and actually gave me a solution that worked?? really happy, thats why i chose the phone over the apple, the double sd card, but couldnt figure out what was going on, and using the Kies was very slow, very awkward, and would have limited me to doing it with puters that have it loaded. i was surprised at how good the phone was, yet how bad the software was for the transfer-guess somehow it got buggered up.. out of curiosity would you know why this might have happened? at first i thought i had removed the sd incorrectly and fried it...but i tested it and it was ok. anyway, thanks gain.

Eventually Samsung technical support recognized this phone has a basic firmware fault: (it powers down to save battery) but it powers down so low that the PC ( or the WiFi , or the 3G) cannot work with the processor anymore. This is when the phone goes very SLOW , looks dead for a long time but eventually, if you have time on your hands, comes back to life...
I have now written to Samsung corporate guys to complain about this as the phone is otherwise superb..
As said above I have returned it now and will wait for next issue.
