Are all earphones aprart from Samsung incompatible??

It seems they are, I have tried now 4 sets of earbuds I have around all of which do not work, only the supplied ones work. All other phones are really quiet and poor quality only on the Galaxy S i9000, they work fine on everything else.

This is also an issue for any AUX out hardware such as in my car.

Would have to say had I known this I would NOT have got this phone, the headphone jack looks like an average one but it clearly is not... Great, I can get 5.1 out of it - but I cant use standard earbuds?? thats poor....

Not happy, feel I have been conned into purchasing samsung phones and equipment only

Having just had to replace the phone 2 days after getting it because I had an Orange branded version (in which the music is clicky and jerky for some reason!) I am not really feeling the love yet I am afraid to say...

Has anyone found earbuds that are not original that work?

I don't know about earbuds, I've never been able to make them stay in my ears for more than 5 seconds. I don't know how people use them. My standard headphones work fine though, so I'd think that earbuds would work too (aren't they basically headphones?). If I find some earbuds around the house I'll give them a try on my SGS first before excorcising and burning them.

I use my Earbuds that came with my Sony Walkman and a set of Sony ones off Amazon with absolutely no loss of sound quality of volume, In fact the ones supplied with my SGS are still in the packet.
Oh and i get 5.1 through both sets.

    Update....

Just tried the ones that came with my SGS and there good but my Sony ones off Amazon sound better so i'll continue to use them.

OK, I've just dug out two sets of headphones (Ableplanet and Skullcandy) and three sets of earbuds (Sennheiser CX400, Cheap HTC pair and a cheap pair with no name) and they all worked as they should do.
What this exercise has done for me though is make me appreciate the difference good quality headphones make when you listen to the same piece of music over and over but with different headsets.

    Hope this helps. Cheers, Banjaxed.

my Skullcandy ones work fine, I've not actually tried the genuine ones because I've got small ear canals and anything other than tiny buds fall out .....

One problem I HAVE had, however, in using the phone as a music player is that it tries to turn on stuff if you have it in your pocket while you're walking, and you get the constant 'clicking' system sound, and find two or three apps running when you get home....

Can you not just lock the phone before putting it in your pocket??

The problem doesn't stop there. Did you read my post about aux output for calling?

Sennheiser CX300: Problem exists with the "mute" button, if its not pressed the quality is bad and 70% of volume goes on the left side. Had to put a little piece to get the button locked permanently. However I have the feeling the original samsung headphones are better...

Hmm I'm on Darky's v9.5 with the Dark Core v1.2 Kernel (Voodoo sound mod embedded) and the sound quality is amazing even through the stock earbuds.

Regarding 3rd party earbuds, I have 4 sets and they all work perfectly, even the really crap ones that come as stock with an ipod.

Voodoo sound kernel is brilliant and a must have, unfortunately its not yet implented in darkys v10rc3 (must use this because only under gingerbread my bricked sd card works flawlessy)... To the stock earphones I must say Samsung made a great job, think they are brilliant. Much better than my expensive sony inear or sennheisser inear. Thats also the reason why I bought them again on ebay...
