Thread: Is this a hardware problem?

    Is this a hardware problem?

I didn’t get the replacement warranty from bell so I’d like to know that this is a hardware problem that’ll be fixed before I send it away to Samsung for weeks on end…

I work in a building with really poor cell reception, my old htc touch had no problems but my new Galaxy S is lucky to send and receive txts.

The problem I’m having is that my phone is constantly locking up when I’m at work, if I don’t notice and reset it (hold down the power button for 15-30 seconds) it’ll drain the battery dead in about an hour or two. When I do notice, it’ll keep locking up a few times every hour! The work around that I have found is to put it into airplane mode, this makes it pretty much useless as a phone.

It seems to work fine everywhere else, mind you I have had problems with it not connecting when I dial out (gives me an “out of area” message, or simply says “radio off”) but it usually works the second or third time I try.

Has anyone else had these problems? I have updated to the latest firmware and have done the factory restore a few times with no effect.

    Thanks for your feedback!

Which firmware did you update it to?

Is wifi/gps enabled before the phone locks up?

"firmware version 2.1-update1" is what it says in the "about phone" menu.

I usually have wifi and gps off, I'll try it with them turned on right now...

Type *#1234# and let us know the values for PDA/PHONE/CSC thanks.

Actually I wasn't going to suggest you turn them on But I guess you could try.. How did you update the firmware?

POST here if your phone is locking up!!!

I talked to a few friends that have this phone and they seem to be having the same problems, to a lesser extent because they work in better buildings... Is it possible that it's an issue with Bell and the Canadian build of this phone?

POST here if your phone is locking up!!!

I have the same problem, but from what I've read it's not limited to just the Bell/Canadian version (though that is also what I have)

Here is a pretty long thread on a different forum with lots of people claiming to have the same issue http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=775017

My Galaxy S Captivate, 2.1 with and without update-1 shuts off many times a week.
The only thing I notice is that it only occurs after I shut off the display by touching the power key.
I have done this in carefully controlled circumstanses multiple times. It doesn't always shut off when I do this, but it never shuts off if I do not do this.

For a long time I thought I must be doing/touching something wrong, but no, it is the phone, and it drives me nuts.
