When you connect phone to PC with data cable you will see the phone and SD card listed as 2 separate devices.
Just drag and drop or cut and paste your pics and videos to a folder on your PC.

Photos taken with the Camera app will be stored in a folder called DCIM/Camera. Whether photos are on the internal sd card or the external sd card depends on which option you chose.

See my files is a very good file manager
It won't confuse you like other file managers
If you want to find where your photo is first go to gallery and then long press on particular picture which you want to know about its location then press options button (it has symbol of three lines, left side of middle button ) then press details. You should not long press the album, you should long press the particular photo only.

once you connect with cable it will say open to view files, then click DCIM, then click CAMERA and they are there to copy+paste or drag+ drop as RichH said

This thread is helpful; I have been wondering how to do exactly this with my older Toshiba PC. I will give it a try...i have far too many images that might be lost if I don't do the sensible thing and back them up..

That's very easy, just transfer photos from phone to PC via USB or some Android manager software.

Since don't know where the photos stored, you may not find them jys connect your phone with PC, you need a tool to help you scan your device and list all the data, I recommend MobiKin Assistant for Android, airdroid, Android Manager for PC. How to transfer photos from android to PC
