text message tones

hi newbie here

no matter what I do I can seem to find how to change the message ringtone to one of my own tunes, it only allows me to use the android tones.
Can this be changed to an mp3 tone or am I stuck with the ones that came with the phone

If you look in your files on the phone there is a notification folder. Go to my files, then Media - Audio. You should have a notifications folder in there. If not then make one and put what tones you want to use in there. Its a total PITA but it has to be done. Default are crud.

Or you can download the app called Zedge. Then you just set your notification tone to one of thousands on there. I change mine every week. At one point it was set to the sound of a sheep. It made for some funny looks in the mens room though!! Lulz.

Try ringdroid - free
Download any mp3 onto your phone - open it in ringdroid
use the slide bars to choose what part of the song you want.
when your happy save it and you get the option to allocate it to a ringtone there and then
or save it and choose it as any other ringtone.

Hi - new to the galaxy s and was disappointed when I couldn't use my own text tone - but, I'm happy now - ringdroid fixed my problem. Cheers

I just use Handcent SMS. It's more customizable And you can set any tone from all your music.
