as title says, my father in law has a galaxy S and i turn his wifi on and in about 5 seconds it just says unable to scan and then turns itself off.
Any solution to this other than a reset?

Try temporarily disabling the security of the Wlan (WEP, WPA, whatever you are using). Connect the phone to it, see if the encryption is the problem.
Samsung Galaxy S ::: Insanity ROM ::: SanDisk 32GB microSD card
i have tried the phone on 2 different LANs, one at work and one at his home so it defo is not the network, also i have the iphone 4 and thats connects without problems. I advised him to get the galaxy s and he aint to happy about it.... lol
Also tried removing the battery for 15 mins, no joy

Have you tried adding it manually? Settings > Wireless/Connections > WiFi settings > Add WiFi network
Non-helpful rant: The rule of thumb is, if you are going to suggest a phone for someone who is not very technically inclined, or not willing to tinker with settings, you always tell them to get the iPhone. Always. That way, if something doesn't work, it's not a fault or a bug, it's a feature.
