If you just want to turn of sync with individual Apps, go to Menu > Settings > Accounts and Sync > "your gmail account" and remove the ticks from the ones you don't want to keep synced.

If you want to turn of syncing completely, go to Menu > Settings > Accounts and Sync and untick "Background Data" and "Auto-Sync".

Usually some app refuses to work if the Background Sync is off. I don't remember which one, though. Apparently I have it on.

And congratulations to godette, great choice!

how do you switch from gps to geo location network for apps for weather apps ???

Using your network to triangulate your position is not an either or but an added feature to give greater accuracy and you can turn on/off in your settings. GPS is the default location system.

You can, but if you turned your phone off to charge, you need to pull out the charger to start your phone, then plug charger back in.

If it's 'what would you like to do' then you've activated Vlingo in Driving Mode.
If not then you've activated 'Talk back' in Accessibility.
