If you find a custom fw for jg8 you shouldnt have to reflash, because jg8 would be the specific fw that the custom rom needs.

you need to be on official fw, and in test mode. to get to test mode(which is only available with the latest v of kies) connect ur phone and launch the fw updater, press ok about the widget warning...

run the scanner and it opens the camera, you just centre your barcode in the area on the camera and it automatically reads it and opens your browser to the app.

edit: ive never heard of slideme...

it will wipe your phone, your apps should be saved in the appbrain program on your pc, so you will easily be able to get them back if they are gone, its more your photos, music, contacts, calender...
