It's normal, what you want to do when you receive a picture is SAVE the picture on to your phone (guide on that can be found here) then open it in your gallery and you can view it as a normal image...
Very normal, it's to allow you to take things off the home screen and not accidentally delete them and stuff. Don't worry about it :)
