Wow, i cannot wait so pumped for the release and my first phone ever.

Anyways, a few noob questions again sorry.

Contract or no contract in your guys experience? Its $149.99 3year or $499 no contract.
My bro had a contract on his old phone and got stuck in it then *** himself over, whats your suggestions?

If i went with contract, i could get the FAB 10, unlimited texting, calling etc to any 10 numbers of my choice with 500mb of date i believe, and 200local minutes i think it is. Have to check on that.

EDIT: This is the plan here. - http://bell.ca/shopping/PrsShpWls_fab10.page?INT=MOB_BAN_moblndpg_studentp lans_TM_052810
Good bad? Any suggestions for first phone buyer.
And i do have a job.

As well, for the phone part, few questions there.

What should I look for to tell the difference between a faulty produced phone, or just normal glitches?
What should I do to prevent certain things, like Kies?
What the is kies?
Should I charger the battery full right away? Or use it and drain it out?
Should I flash firmware, and uninstall kies? How do I do that, and how can I tell to do that?
What widgets should I take out that are memory hogging, and make the phone slow?
How do I get antivirus on there, and what antivirus is suggested?

I am reading through many threads and just putting some questions together before I get my phone this Friday, and so I don’t get ** and return it. Never done any rooting or anything, first phone ever.

Reading this one - http://samsunggalaxysforums.com/showthread.php/738-My-Galaxy-S-experience-(wall-of-text)/page2

Just curious if you should root it right away or not, how do you root it, and what the hell is rooting anyways?

Any suggestions basically for a complete noob with phone firmware and whatnot. I am really good with catching onto things, and will be able to do it with instructions and it won’t be a problem, but no idea where to start because I have never had a phone.

Thanks a ton!!! :)

grats on your first phone, you really picked a nice one. i would say if youre going to go with no contract, you might as well get the factory version that we all use, you can find it on alot of online retailers. something to keep in mind, if you buy it with a contract (at least over here in the US) theyll charge you extra charges a month for having what they call a 'smartphone data plan', its usually around 15 dollars more than the normal data plan, and its required you subscribe to one if you wish to use the phone. thats a big thing to keep in mind. theres little difference between the vibrant and the factory version tho, our version has a front camera, yours doesnt, but instead it has a 6 axis gyro, which will allow better gaming, and even 3D effects. the vibrant is also around 200 dollars cheaper. as far as what plan to get, ive noticed with my carrior, that if you get the unlimited texting/data bundle it will end up costing the same 30 dollars theyd normally charge you for the data plan alone. so yeah, they want an extra 30 dollars a month from you, you can either get unlimited texting AND data, or they can just over charge you for data. so as far as which plan, i would say get the package deal. the nice camera and fast internet, along with the nicely threaded messaging will make sharing pictures fun (lol i sound like a tv ad)

What should I look for to tell the difference between a faulty produced phone, or just normal glitches?
if you buy it from a legit company (tmobile of course is very legit) then the odds of getting a falty phone are slim to none, any bugs will most likely be caused by user error, and can easily be fixed (weve all got a bug or two, this forum is how we deal with them, odds are someones been thru the same situation you were). of course youre always welcome to ask a 'is this normal' question, and see what ppl say.
What should I do to prevent certain things, like Kies?
RomManager and Titanium Backup are two great ways to back up data. that way if anything does go wrong (for example my swype texting keyboard broke randomly, i was able to restore a backup created with Titanium Backup)
lol kies is this useless program for the computer, its a bitch to install and takes forever to load, it pretty much lets you transfer files over, and backup some stuff. pretty much everything you can do on your own.. i dont use it.
uhh, some people like to drain it all the way and then give it a full charge, i dont really know if theres any benefit behind that or not, personally i plugged mine in right away cause i was psyched about my new phone
you should install kies (or find one of the kies drivers links) (doing one of those will make the computer recognize the phone when you plug it in, otherwise it notice the phone when you plug it in) and yeah flash it yourself, be a baller. thats what most ppl here do anyway, itll be easy and way more up to date than samsung kies
as far as widgets, just straight up flashing a new firmware will get rid of all that crap your carrier will put on it to support themself (and slow down your phone)..
lol antivirus? i dont know of any hackers making viruses to hurt our phone. lol its hard enough to get them to support our phone, let alone take the time to try and mess it up lol. but WaveSecurity is good for if it gets stolen, itll track your phone wherever its at, and you can even shut down your phone remotely with it.
after you take a day to play with your phone, go ahead and root it. rooting it is basically hacking it, and giving it administrator rights like on a computer, you can do alot of stuff, like edit system files, control your processor, even alter data, its a good thing to have. no down side to it.
get JM3, its the latest and greatest firmware out, its where you wanna be.

this is how you root your phone
http://samsunggalaxysforums.com/showthread.php/365-Detailed-guide-on-rooting-the-Galaxy-S?highlight=rooting

this is how you flash firmware (remember the newer firmware uses pit 512, not 513, youll figure out what im talking about later)
http://samsunggalaxysforums.com/showthread.php/91-Tutorial-How-to-debrand-and-flash-newer-firmware-to-your-Galaxy-S?highlight=debranding

sorry no link to JM3 pizzas here

Wow!!! Thank you sooooooooooooooo much Soraxd! Basically answered everything and it helped a ton!!!! :)

only thing i can't buy the factory version off the internet, so thats why im going to bell and buying it off contract now.

so you suggest getting the package deal i linked?? THe Fab10?

Or look for a different package deal? Because i am going in today to see what they have, and then make a decision for tomorrow.

Actually i am a bit confused on your description of the plan and contract you posted. I get a little bit of the idea.

Only thing as far as i know here in Canada, if you don't have a SIM card with the carrier, such as im going with Bell and don't have their SIM card, i can't choose a non-smartphone plan for a smartphone.

Like your saying get $30dollar plan then add on Data? Because we have no $30 plan that has unlimited text and data. Our minimum smartphone plan is $50bucks a month.

If you wouldn't mind going onto their site and seeing a plan it would help a ton. - http://www.bell.ca/shopping/PrsShpWls_RtpLanding.page

My bro has a plan on Rogers where he had his initial $30 bucks for talk text etc, but he added on $20 for data, and pays $50 bucks a month. But he didn't put in 3g..... :S he said he didn't want it. If i get the $50 one i get 3g in it.
