Do you have two extra empty drives in My Computer?
If so, you'll need to bring down the status screen on your Galaxy S and press the USB icon. It will ask if you want to connect. When you accept you can use My Computer to view the internal storage.

Go to Settings --> About Phone --> USB and choose "Ask on connection". That let me connect to Kies sometimes, still pretty flakey though, but mass memory always worked that way. Once connected in mass memory you still need to mount the drives from the notifications tray unfortunately.

My Galaxy S only has the internal 16gb card. I don't know if this is a problem or not.
I have Windows 7 x64.

I run Kies in Windows, then connect my phone via USB. Kies shows nothing.
No "connecting.." or anything.
I have made sure that I chose the Samsung Kies option in the phone when connecting via USB

I tried the Update and Driver Recovery options in Kies. Made no difference (even though a newer driver was downloaded)

So, I tried to connect as a mass storage device.
I mounted the disk from the option on the phone. However, Windows does not detect anything.
So no drives are shown.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Try remount the internal SD card. Go settings > Sd and storage > unmount and then mount it again. Now try plug in the usb and see if it connects?

I got it working.

I just rebooted the phone and tried it again.
This time when I connected, I got the windows popup saying new hardware had been found, and Kies also recognised it.

Thanks for the help.

Yup, it works on my machine at work (Windows 7 64x) using 'Mass Storage'. Remount internal did the trick

It says underneath the download that Kies doesn't work for 64 bit versions of Windows. Did you manage to get it going JockyMC? I haven't tried it because of that so I installed it on my slow as a wet week netbook.

Settings>About phone>USB settings> Ask on connect then when you connect your phone click samsung kies, and you can drop down the dropdown box once connected, and click Mount USB, and then Unmount USB
if that doesnt work for you then im out of ideas

does your computer recognize the phone? if your computer doesnt recognize the phone, its usually because it doesnt have the drivers installed, i dont really know how that could happen cause installing the drivers is part of samsung kies, but if thats the case you could try installing the drivers manually

Although Kies is working, but I still found Kies is very unstable, quite often it stops detect my phone after a serveral times of plugging and unpluging. Sometimes I have to restart PC to get it work again. I now only use mass storage for most of the time.

Here's what I done.
Connected the phone as a mass storage device
mounted it
rebooted the phone
connected it again using the Kies option
This time, Kies started and it worked ok.

Since I only use Kies to sync my contacts and calendar (using the mass storage option for copying music, photos etc) I just use my google account for contacts and calendars and sync with that.
So don't really need Kies at all now.

However, will I need Kies when upgrading to 2.2?

What stupid kies working for me was that I was using launcher pro. Kies only works with touch wiz. Don't need kies anyway, odin and mass storage is all I need.

Switching back to touch wiz didn't make a difference. Oh well, i guess i will just have to live without the fantastic Samsung software :p
