Hi, eventually managed to set up emails on my samsung galaxy s using the vodafone 360.com outgoing server. It wouldn't accept my ISP outgoing one?!

However, when I try to open emails they quite often do not open properly and if they do I have to press on a button to open pictures/full email. Is this normal? After pressing on this button to load up the full email it takes forever to do this or quite often doesn't.

Does anyone have any advice as to why this should be happening? I am getting rather frustrated  On my ipod touch I am able to access and load FULL emails at lightening speed.

I thought getting this phone would be a step better but up till now it seems to be a step back. The firmware is up to date on the phone.

Help!

Ok, first of all: If you use your ISP email account, it'll probably not let you send e-mail from another network than your ISP's. So no e-mailing over 3G.
It probably works on your iPod because it is connected to your Wi-Fi network, which is connected to your ISP's network.

Is your Galaxy S connected to your Wi-Fi network, or are you using a mobile network to retrieve email? Mobile network are a lot slower than Wi-Fi, so that could be causing the trouble.

I have set up email on the mobile as follows

Incoming - imap.plus.net
Outgoing - smtp.360.com

I am connected to my home wifi when I try to open emails on my mobile, but they are still so so slow to open, if they ever do. I would have thought being connected thro my home wifi would be the quickest way for emails to open, or am I wrong?

Are you using SMTP authentication?

I never have any trouble retrieving email on my Galaxy S... Are you sure your firmware is up-to-date? (What firmware are you on?)

I have connect the mobile via kies to see if there is a firmware update available but it told me it was up to date.

incoming is imap.plus.net and outgoing is smtp.360.com with ssl whatever

I'm sure you're on the last official firmware, yes, but there have been many releases of beta testing firmwares, some of which are much much better than the pre-installed ones. Many bugs and issues are fixed, and general usability is much improved. JM2 comes to mind.

What baffles me though is the fact that you have to use Vodafone outgoing servers. Is your phone sim-locked to Vodafone? I'm no e-mail expert but using Vodafone outgoing for Plus email sounds weird to me.

Edit: ehh, nevermind, I get it now... I guess you have to use Vodafone servers to be able to send mail via 3G? I did say I'm no email expert, hahaha... :) I really have NO help at all to offer...

Have you used the settings from your ISP? Did it tell you to use SSL?

Kies firmware update is useless until a Froyo update is available. Please start your Dialer app, type *#1234# and post the results here.

Pda i9000xxjf3
phone i9000xxjf3
csc i9000oxajf3

I tried using the outgoing server from Plusnet but it did not work. Vodafone told me to use theirs smtp.360.com with SSL ticked

Incoming is ok with imap.plus.net

Embedded pictures in any email take forever to load, and quite often do not.

Your firmware is not the newest there is. It may be good to flash a newer firmware on your phone.
Pros:
- Faster phone (lag problem is a big issue in JF3)
- Better GPS
- Bugfixes
Cons:
- Losing warranty

If you want to flash a new firmware, I can recommend JM2, it's the newest and (arguably) the best firmware yet.
Although I'm not sure if your problem will be solved by flashing a new firmware.

I found to have the same problem with email app and my gmail account. Try a different email client like for example k-9 or MailDroid both available for free on Android Market.

I'm sorry but if your ISP's outgoing server isn't working over WI-FI, but the Vodafone one is (provided it has the right settings), you aren't operating on WI-FI at all. You are using the 3G connection. The problem is that your ISP doesn't allow sending messages when you are connected to another network. If your Wifi was truly working, this wouldn't be an issue because you are in fact connected through their network.

Thanks for your help. I have just got the phone so am a bit reluctant to download any firmware that might nul and void my warranty. I will just have to wait for Froya, and hope it is released soon for the UK, and that it improved my email use.

Before you load, and try different things, I have had the same problem since I got my phone and have been reading tons of post of people who don't even own the phone. And it is driving me crazy. I own a Galaxy S, and this is what I did to solve the problem.
Start by going to the email tab at the bottom of your phone. when there hold down your email account mine for example is gmail and aol, if I hold down aol and wait to my settings come up go to account settings then email check frequency. Move it to 10 minutes, mine was on never, reason being I didn't think you had to push it through. But apparently, it does make a difference. Hope this works for you.
