Hi all, had my sgs for about 2 weeks now and love it but over the past few days I have noticed that the WiFi keeps turning it self on. If I bring the phone out of standby WiFi has switched it self on if I then switch it of and put the phone back into standby and check it again a few minuets later WiFi is back on. Has anyone else noticed this?

Yes I noticed that too. But in my case it only turns on when there is Wifi network. And I believe the auto notification of availability of a wifi network should also work only when Wifi is switched on. I find it good anyway, except that it may drain my battery.

It does not happen before, does anyone think an app may have caused this?

I have network notification set to off so it shouldn't be searching for a open network. Have just this minuet checked it and WiFi has turned it self on again.

YOu mean it turns on "always?" If that is the case, then I suggest you bring it to a service center.

Yes WiFi turns it's self on, not all the time but I am now checking it regularly to see if it is on, if it is then I switch it off. As I said I have network notification set to off so it shouldn't be searching for a open network.

i had the same problem last week, no fix that i could find other than to get a replacement from your network. New one works perfectly!

Here's an update on the wifi on my sgs. I contacted samsung via there email support and here is what they had to say:

Thank you for contacting Samsung Electronics UK regarding your GT-I9000.
Can you please try turning the phone off and back on. If the problem
persists try performing a soft reset on the handset.
If the problem persists could I please ask you to call our Samsung
Contact Centre on 0845 726 7864 for assistance so we can try and resolve this matter as quickly as possible.
I would ask that before you call you get the full model code and serial number of the mobile phone which can be found
usually be located on a small sticker on the inside of the phone underneath the battery.
When calling please be with the equipment.
The lines are open from 9am to 6pm Monday to Saturday.

So I phoned them, and here is what they said,

The guy I spoke to said it was normal for the phone to switch WiFi on automatically so it was always ready to connect.
He then posted this reply via my samsung:

Cst called--advised that the handset was designed for high internet
usage so that there is no way to stop it trying to connnect (he has
switched 3G off). Was sceptical but eventually OK with that.

My Reply

Not happy with that at all.
In the user manual that came with the phone it clearly states the
following on page 83: An active WLAN running in the background will
consume battery power. To preserve battery power activate the WLAN only
when needed.
So my question again is why is the wifi randomly turning it's self on?

as i've said in another thread, Samsung support is one of the worst...

btw, just 2 days ago i noticed that my wifi is now also turning itself on...

Mine has started doing something weird with the WiFi since I got the official firmware update to JM1.

I can only get a GPRS signal in this area, so when I'm at home I always turn the WiFi on so it uses my home wireless network for internet access/syncing etc... this worked fine before the update.

Now I find that the phone is randomly using the GPRS rather than the WiFi (even if the WiFi is turned on) - I can tell this because I can hear the "clicking" noises when the phone is too near to a speaker or something - but now the strange part...

If I slide away the lock screen, the WiFi signal icon appears again and the phone switches over to using WiFi. I don't have to hit any buttons or activate anything, it just does it. Then it will keep using WiFi for a few minutes until it decides to revert back to using GPRS again, even though the WiFi is still enabled!

Anyone have any ideas please ?

I am not on JM1, so this could be a JM1 issue.

However, you could try the following below just to hopefully isolate the problem..

Settings > Location and security > Untick use wireless networks

How are you turning on/off wifi/3g? Using an app/widget or manually doing it?

Hi, thanks for the quick response. I have discovered that there are new settings available with JM1 where you can tell the wifi connection to go to sleep when the screen locks, and this is enabled by default. I've changed it to always stay on and it has sorted my problem :)

I was using the dropdown notifications switch to turn the wifi on and off btw.

Cheers.
