: Sales rep told me....Phone will break without 4g or 3g!

I sent this email to my carrier's tech team"

"I renewed three of my wireless contracts this week in Anchorage, Alaska. When I renewed them the sales person told me that the Galaxy S2 would not work in my area. I explained that I understood that 3g and 4g is not supported in the area.

He told me that he could not give me the S2 because it cannot sync with the GCI network via 4g or 3g and that would be damaged because of that. He told me not to expect GCI to replace the phone because for that reason since it would be broken within a couple of months. I was wondering why the phone cannot work with 2g data and make normal cellular calls when it is not connected to the 3/4g network if purchased through GCI stores. I renewed my contracts because I wanted the S2 because of the improved processor and new features over the old Galaxy S.

Let me know since I already have one Galaxy S2 that I bought before they were offered through GCI and it works fine up here."

I think he is feeding me a line of BS, he was pretty rude about it as well. He told me he had already turned down multiple people with family plans since the phones wouldn't work and would break because it can't connect. I was going to buy a unlocked Iphone 4 but wanted to try a Galaxy 2 when I saw they were offering one for $99. GCI is a GSM network and my Iphone 3g works well up here, hoping to replace it with a S2.

I can't see any reason it wouldn't work, it's basically like running it with data turned off. But it would lose a lot of functionality and may be a bit overkill cost wise if you don't have 3G. If you've got wifi then it really shouldn't matter.

It won't "break", but it you set Network Mode to 3G or Auto in Mobile Network Settings it will drain the battery constantly looking for a 3G signal which isn't there. I don't have a 3G signal at home, so to save battery I keep it set to 2G and use wifi at home, then switch to 3G when I use it at work.
