: Galaxy S2 Wifi problem!

Hi,

I've been using galaxy s2 for 2 month now and everything was fine.

Then suddenly my wifi stopped working.

Wifi is connected but I cannot access any internet.

Wifi is okay because my laptop is fine and it's my home wifi so I've using it for past 2month.

It just stopped working. Even though it is connected.

In one sentence: Wifi is connected but no internet access. 3g is working fine.

Can someone fix this?

Thankyou

Have you tried:
Forgetting connections.
Restarting your phone.
Restarting your router.

If it was working and you haven't done anything to your phone (Ie: Update phone. Install a new app). Then the above should help. Try them in different combos:)

jaeyeonkang,

You are not alone. I have exactly the same issue. Bizarrely, the problem appears to be more pronounced in morning (UK time).

Here is a typical breakdown of my issue and the steps I'm taken : -

1.) Wifi connected with good signal strength but no data connectivity.
2.) Switching off wifi - moves to 3G - data connectivity restored.
3.) Switch wifi back on - no connectivity
4.) Switch phone to flight mode
5.) Switch off flight mode - goes back to wifi - data connectivity restored.

I can confirm that during the times of lost connectivity on the phone - all other wireless devices (three always on) on the network continue to function normally. I can also confirm the internet connection is up and running as I stream live market data so any loss is noticeable quickly.

I tried speaking to Samsung regarding the issue but it's painful (in the UK at least). They are not interested in diagnosing any issue and give you the bog standard response of sending the device off for warranty repair which means no phone for three weeks which is a pain for me. I'd also be very surprised if this was a hardware issue (why would flight mode fix it? why does it not happen all the time?) so it seems a pointless exercise for me.

I was probably the biggest fan when the S2 first came out.....but some of the software bugs are starting to get quite annoying and samsung's after sales support seems pretty feeble. I'll plod on until the Nexus Prime I think.....

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I've already tried everything above before posting this thread.
Is there any other method?

Flight mode didn't work for me :(

Are you able to reset your router. Could be a pain though if you have lots of stuff that connects to it.

Firmware update may have fixed this, I'm not sure if I would notice this any more as I use juice defender and it turns data off when the screen is off. Buuuut when i first got the phone with an early firmware it would connect and work on wifi and then after an hour or two somehow lose the connection but still show as connected. Toggling it on and off fixed this and I believe a newer firmware tackled the issue.

Hi there.

You are not alone.

I just had my S2 for 2 weeks.

Using the DLink DIR655 wireless router.

My iPad detects and uses the wi-fi well. But this morning, the S2 cannot detect the wi-fi.
Instead, it scans and detected the neighbors wi-fi.

I had boosted the wi-fi transmission power (from Low to Med), sat near or next to the router, checked the antenna etc etc.

3G is working fine but slower than my wi-fi.

Looking forward to some more check & unchecking to restore this service.

have you ever tried upgrading your firmware? or maybe re-flashing your s2 will help fix the problem..

Until I updated to the latest and greatest (GINGERBREAD.XWKF3) a few days ago I had no problems with the WIFI on my G2. Since, however, I experience the same problems as initially described in this thread. Turning WIFI off and then on makes no difference. Turning Flight Mode on and then off do restore proper connectivity for a while but then it reverts to the annoying non-connectivity state. In the latter case it sometimes stays ok for 10-20 seconds, while other times it stays ok for several minutes.

The behaviour could indicate that there is a service on the phone that kicks into life intermittently (perhaps an update check of some kind) and causes the problem either directly or indirectly. Or, it could be some kind of virus or malware that is bugging us. Does anyone know if there exists a system level logger that tracks when services starts and stops??

Lasse,

I'm seeing the same re: flight mode toggle only restoring connectivity briefly. The problem for me appears to be getting worse so i'm sending it off on Monday for repair (without much confidence I might add but I have no choice).

Re: system services. Do you have the samsung remote functions software configured? Perhaps a coincedence but when the prroblem started for me I noticed the little icon was alive and attempting to do something.

As you might expect i've had no luck with samsung sssupport at all. Seriously. The lack of techincal expertise from the phone trolls is staggering. Ive spent one hour on the phone to these muppets and not once has anyone even asked me for build number of the phone i.e. oh version X.....there is a much later version that may address ur issue.

As it happens i'm on all the latest versions. I have an unbranded S2 which is 2.3.3.. the guy said some networks are running 2.3.4 but they are network speciific. Of course, he had absolutely no idea why or any advice on how I might get my phone upgraded.

I will let you know if the repair makes any difference which will be about three weeks time *sigh*

I have the same problem, but didnt had that before my upgrade.
I had problems with wifi hotspot so installed the latest 2.3.4 update (at that time, i was on 2.3.3) and since that time i have wifi problems.
Switching on and off data services seem to fix the problem sometimes.

Knowing that, im pretty sure the problem is related to the firmware used. Since im basically always on 3g i really dont care that much (unless im roaming).

Voadyoda,

Try this once connectivity is lost;
a) switch off WIFI,
b) open the Task Manager and terminate unused apps, the go to the RAM tab and Clear Memory.
c) swith on WIFI

This works for me and WIFI connectivity stays on for a good hour until I have to repeat the procedure. I've had some problems with the Market app that refuses to connect using GPRS following loss of WIFI connectivity. This was also true if I used the Task Manager in between to terminate the Market app. The Market app is regularly checking for updates to your installed apps and I suspect that it is not disconnecting properly afterwards. The Clear Memory does, however, seem to remove whatever it is that is left. I suspect that the Market app is checking for updates rather soon after a boot and after Flight Mode is turned off, hence it seems to fit will with the modus operandi of the loss of WIFI connectivity I have experienced.

I only "discovered" this possible cause this afternoon and will monitor the behaviour over the next few days to see if there is consistency in my observations....

I'm having the same problem... have yoy got some fix to suggest me ?

I had a similar problem. I got my Galaxy S2 3 months ago and had no problems. However when I returned from a trip to China (fight mode + wifi for 2 weeks), I noticed the wifi was intermittent at home.

I tried all the steps mentioned in this thread but the wifi would stop working after a few minutes. The strange thing was the S2 worked on my friend's wifi and my laptop worked on my home wifi?

I read somewhere that upping the encryption used by the wifi router might fix the issue. This wasn't easy because my router was locked down by Sky. After hacking the router I switched to WPA2 encryption.

Since switching to WPA2 nearly two weeks ago my S2 has had no wifi issues :D

Hope this helps.

I am having problems with the wifi on my galaxy s2, that i bought yesterday.
The wireless router is a buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH. The problem is that i can connect but after sometime stops working, and keeps says that still connected. The signal strenght is also bad.

A guy that lives here have no problem with the wifi on his laptop and iphone.

If i turn off the wifi on the phone and than turn on it starts working, but after some time stops again.

Before i have this galaxy i had a sony ericsson that i returned to the store last week because of the same wifi problem.

The phone came with the android 2.3.3, i already updated to 2.3.4, but didnt fixed the problem.

I dont have acess to the router to change its configuration.

I got this galaxy s2 thinking that gonna solve my problem, and maybe i am wrong, but i think that the wireless on the phone should work like on a laptop, with no problem every where, no matter which router or configuration.

Is there any firmware for the router that i can install on my phone or do you have any other ideia?

Thank you for the help.

It could be the Wifi sleep policy on the phone.

Go to Menu > Settings > Wireless & Network > WiFi Settings > Menu > Advanced > Wifi Sleep Policy > Select 'Never'
(I don't have an SGSII so some menu options may differ)

Edit: It could also be something a bit more technical though :)

The sleep policy is already on never.

I am also facing this wifi issue on my S2. It gets connected to wifi and then internet works fine but after few minutes internet stops working. If I stop and start wifi again, internet starts working again. Anyone found a permanent fix for this?
Thanks

Hi, just wanted to add my frustration to the queue.

I got my GS2 (att version) last week and had no trouble at all with wifi until last night. Now my phone's wifi (all while the phone indicates the wifi signal is excellent) slows down or stops working completely. It seems to happen on a cycle, as there are periods of no connectivity followed by fast and slow periods. Another curious thing is that even when the connectivity is slow or fast, I still cannot connect to (or detect) my TV or my allshare hub with the Samsung TV remote/Samsung Allshare apps (these both worked fine before the problems started). Connecting to the SwiFTP server I have running on my phone is impossible as well, no matter if the connectivity happens to be on a fast/slow or non existent cycle. However, I have found that my IRC client on the phone (Yaaic) seems to be able to connect to servers no matter what.

This is all extremely frustrating since one of the features I liked about the phone was being able to manage my files over wifi, and with this problem that is now impossible.

edit: I should add that I've isolated my router and my internet connection and tested them both individually, they are definitely not the problem

Before going off on anything complex, try changing the channel your WiFi Router is broadcasting on. You won't need to make changes to any of your client devices. They will recognise the router by its name, as before.

With new and more powerful WiFi services coming on line all the time, it's possible someone near you has activated a new WiFi service on the same channel as your default.

You may have to play about with the channels to get the best result.

How do I know which channel to go on?

Rich Holder
11-02-2011, 12:34 PM
Download "wifi analyser" off the market and it will show you what channel you are broadcasting on and the channel of any nearby wifi signals. Then go into you router settings and change the channel away from anything else nearby.

Hi,

I just got my SGSII yesterday , and it was not connecting to my Wifi , but i did a Hard Reset and now it gets connected . It worked great for an hour but then internet connection was lost after every 2 minutes. To get the access to internet back i have to turn off-turn on wifi every 2 minutes.

Loving the device but hating the problem . If i get a solution/fix to this problem , it would become a flawless device . Pl HELP!

Should i flash any custom ROM if this is a Firmware issue. My WIFI is fine as i can connect to all other devices.

Appreciate the post. Wifi Fixer worked for me for, ooh, must have been a whole day.

If I'd read this thread 5 days ago my S2 would still be on Amazon's shelf. I'm checking their returns policy right now.

Didnt work for me still. Tried a couple of other wifi fixers as well. I replaced the phone once thinking that it may be a faulty one since my wife's S2 is working just great!! I have the KH7 build on AT&T. I dont know if I should just return this phone for good in favor of another phone...I just love everything else on the phone...

Anyone got some other solutions?

Thanx in advance...

Ok so after wasting a whole evening trying to get Cyanogen working I stumbled upon a solution that worked for me, and it's a complete head thumper...

Settings > Wireless and Network > Wi-Fi Settings > Settings (touch key to the left of the main button) > Advanced > Use Static IP - turn this off.

No idea why this is on as default, but that's what was forcing mine to continually disconnect. I also made the wi-fi sleep policy 'never'.

Im very Interested in Wifi Problems. I have a guide in the Galaxy s General Forum. Although I dont have an SII i believe the Android system is exactly the same. It might be worth while you trying what I now call the "DHCP Fix". The phone needs to be rooted for this and you need a file manager that allows access to the root ( / ) folder (I use Root explorer).
Once you have the phone rooted and a File Manager that will allow root access then you need to go to /Data/Misc/dhcp and delete the File "DHCP_list". Once this file is deleted restart the phone and reconnect to the WiFi system. This fixes the "cannot obtain IP" problem and Im thinking although you say you are connected to wifi there is an issue with the lease been obtained from your router.

Although I dont have an SII I have used this Fix on a Galaxy Tab earlier today with full success.

Good Luck

If it worked before installing the app the easiest solution would be to just factory rest the phone. Can be done in a couple of ways:

With the phone off, press and hold in succession the Vol+, home button and power button. Keep held till a boot screen appears.

With the phone on go to Menu > Settings > Privacy > Factory Reset.

If you installed the offending app to an external SD then you may want to remove any media (or anything you want to keep) and then format or erase the external sd card too.

This should put the phone in the same state as it left the factory thus with working wifi. If it still doesn't work then may be speak to the people who gave you the phone?

By factory setting will I loose all my data, installed programs and contacts. Should I take back up.

Tufftoad
01-13-2012, 08:02 AM
Yup you will lose all of that. If you want to back them up you can but you may need to root your phone first.

I just usually back up my contacts with google and my apps with Titanium Backup. Alternatively you could just make a list of your apps.

Let me put an end to this all (or kind of):

1- Try turning off Wi-Fi and putting it back on. Does Wi-Fi now work? If yes, go to step 4 If no, go to step 2.
2- Try restarting your phone by switching it off and on OR going to flight mode and then back to normal. Does Wi-Fi work now? If yes, go to step 6 If no, go to step 3.
3- Factory reset your phone. Does Wi-Fi work now? If yes, congratulations on fixing your problem. If no go to step 4.
4- Turn off Sleep mode: Settings > Wireless and Network > Wi-Fi Settings > Settings (touch key to the left of the main button) > Wi-Fi sleep policy > change it to 'Never'. If this fixed your problem, you're done. If not, go to step 5.
5- Turn off Static IP: Settings > Wireless and Network > Wi-Fi Settings > Settings (touch key to the left of the main button) > Advanced > Use Static IP - turn this off. If this fixed your problem, you're done. If not, go to step 6.
6- In most Wi-Fi problems I've seen with Galaxy SII, Wi-Fi automatically stops working after being idle for a while. If your Wi-Fi never stops working while you're using the internet on the phone or when you have Skype running in the background, then this is probably your case. Software such as Wifi Fix run a low-consumption background software which sends and receive data every now and again to make sure Wi-Fi doesn't go idle. This should solve your problem. Otherwise you are most likely having a hardware problem which can't be solved and you'll need to send the phone back to Samsung for repair.

Hope this helps!

Had the same problem for a couple of weeks. All my other WI-FI devices were working properly (so no reset from the router needed). When going through the different options of my mobile I noticed in the advanced settings of my Samsung WI-FI configuration that the IP address was set to Static. Once I removed the check everything was fine again. I hope this helps. Good luck?

ok guys, i had this same problem and for the past hour i've been trying to fix it. I DID IT!!

Alright, what i did first was to go on wifi settings/menu/advanced. Where it says wifi sleep policy, i changed it from never to "when screen turns off". Then went back to wifi settings and turned wifi OFF. I went back to menu/advanced and changed sleep policy back to NEVER. Went back and turned wifi ON. Clicked on my wifi network which is my house wifi and then clicked FORGET!! The phone will scan itself for new networks, and your wifi network will appear again. Connect it again and wala! It worked for me!

Hope this helps!

Hi Guys, i was struggling for 3 days full on with the wifi problem on my new 3 day old samsung galaxy s-II. Since i bought it i never could get a stable wifi connection at home. I had switched from iPhone to S2 and was wondering if i made the right decision. S2 is great, big screen, deep colours and flexibility but i was aware that it might not stand the quality that iPhones have.

Problems i have with s2 on wifi were:-

1. connection gets established and i start browsing
2. after a while i keep the phone away and go do my thing at home...watch tv, clean place, dinner...stuff
3. come back after a while and unlock screen and try doing the wifi thingy and it stops working. the wifi is still on in the notifications window but not able to browse etc...
4. tried turning off wifi and turning it on again, removing connection to router and restablishing, using static IP, using wifi fixer, changing sleep mode to NEVER...Nothing worked. My iPhone, Nokia phone and laptop work seamlessly at time all day and all night.
5. after 3 days, last night i switched off the router and switched it back on and since then its working just great. no issues at all.

Thought i will share this with the forum just so it may help someone.

Love ma s2 now :)
