Several times now the camera application has hung on me. None of the buttons or menus respond except the power button. The only option seems to be to turn the phone off and on again. Does anyone else get this, or better still does anyone have s solution?
I am running the stock european f3 rom.

Never had this problem...
You could try to flash a new firmware? That might solve your problems.

I have had my phone 3 days.. and it did the 'hanging' problem yesterday. It would frame a scene and when I tried to reframe it, the screen was frozen on the first scene. Also, several times after I clicked the camera button it went to the initial black opening screen and froze there. Also, the on/off button on the phone was frozen for a while. This being a 'new' phone, I didn't want to keep it..having issues like that. AT&T exchanged it today. This is my first Android phone...I tried the iPhone 4 for a couple of weeks and had 'issues' with it. All in all, I like the Galaxy S...

Have you try reboot your phone? Is it still happen after reboot? It could be running of memory because of some programs still running at the background.
If reboot fixes the problem, you might want to limit your background programs running by:
1) Close apps by use the exit menu of the app or using the back button instead of home button, clicking home button will only hide the app instead of closing it.
2) Download tasks manager like Advanced Task Manager from market, these program will show you what is running at the background and give you options to kill it.
If reboot doesn't fix the problem, it could be hardware faulty.
Hope these help.

I noticed today when the camera froze again that there was actually a padlock icon on the screen which isn't there normally. I also wondered if it had frozen because I hadn't touched the screen in a while and so the screen would normally like but instead of going to the lock screen the camera was still on. I tried swiping the screen from top to bottom as I normally would but it didn't do anything.
Still the lock icon tells me that the system knows it's locked and it isn't just a system hang. I will RTFM for a while to see if there is anything I missed and then I'll contact samsung if I still can't work out how to unlock the camera.

When I first bought my phone camera didn't work Message Warning - Camera Failed. I reset to factory settings and it worked for about 12 hours. I reset again and tested after every app was put on and it still worked then about 10-12 hours later it stopped working again. Battery is charged up.

The padlock icon is there to show that the buttons are locked out while in camera mode. You can toggle it on and off by hitting the power button when your camera is active.
It's more useful in video camera mode, to stop you accidentally touching a button when you holding the camera while recording.

Having read a few different stories about this issue, there always seems to be two possible answers.
1) Installing an app called "Fring" can seriously screw up the camera control software on the SGS.
2) The camera hardware itself is failing and you need to get the phone exchanged while it's still under warranty.

Many thanks. I haven't installed Fring so guess its option 2. Strange but camera worked for a while today and then stopped again. I actually bought phone at Dubai airport. Tried calling the seller who gives me a number for mobile phone maintenance which never gets answered despite a number of attempts. From reading my warranty today , I can only get it sorted there. Is there any way to get direct contact with Samsung to try to over come this proceedure? A friend has suggested re-installing Android firmware. Do you think that would help?

It's worth a try I guess. Are there any firmware updates available to you through Kies ??

I ran into this problem on my Galaxy GIO after I once pressed the power button on the side while the camera was running. The phone locked, but the camera was still the foreground application and went back to that state whenever I started it. Now here's what helped me: In the Settings->Applications->Manage Applications->All I looked for the camera application and deleted all of its stored data (preferences), which seems to include that state. Right after that it was back working as usual.

That is actually a feature. If you run the stock camera app, then hit the power button you will notice a small padlock icon appear on the screen. The touchscreen and the soft buttons will be totally unresponsive until you hit the power button again to disable the lock.
Note that on some custom roms the power button is actually used to take the picture, rather than the on-screen shutter button.
