i want to switch the 3g network off completely so that even when i dont have a wifi connection it stays off.
ive tried many things but it still flashes 3g in the top bar
ive contacted orange they said they will switch my internet usage off but that doesnt have seemed to work, then i have changed it to 2g only in the settings and i also changed the phones internal settings to cdma only but that keeps on changing back as soon as i leave that menu
does someone have any suggestions?
thanks in advanced

after you turn your wifi on, press the power button for a second, and click airplane mode

If you don't want to connect to the internet ever other than through wi-fi then go into settings>wireless and network>mobile networks>access point names. Select the the internet apn and then press the menu key and select delete.
NOW there are no settings to allow cellular internet access.
If you want to change to the 2g network only(data can still be downloaded this way) Then select network mode and gsm only or on earlier firmwares select force 2g. Selecting cdma only will only allow 3g.

Google maps needs a cellular data connection to work.

You need a data connection for google maps so if you don't want date charges it won't work.

Menu > Settings > Wireless and Network > Mobile networks > Use only 2G networks.
Don't know if this is standard or added in with Extended Controls app which is really cheap and very much worth it on the marketplace :)

2G shouldn't. Not if you're not using the internet. It doesn't have a constant data connection.
What exactly are you doing to incurr charges all the time? Also seems odd to me to go and get a phone such as the SGS only to want to turn the data availability off. :S Whats your tariff with Orange? They've got some pretty good contracts that allow quite a lot of internet usage with 3G.

Go to Settings -> Wireless and network -> Mobile networks -> Access Point Names
Delete from there all Access Points (except the one for MMS): Select access point -> press menu -> Delete APN
Hope this helps
